2010 College Football Power Rankings

Mark Albracht
Two games into the 2010 college football season and we finally have enough data to start some power rankings. It's still a jumbled mess, though, and you won't see any real separation until weeks four or five -- especially with some high-regarded teams (like Boise State) having only played one game.

At any rate, this is how the 2010 college football power rankings stack up so far.

1. Oregon Ducks (2-0)
Points: 16.0

The Ducks have not missed wayward quarterback Masoli in the slightest having racked up 11 offensive touchdowns and 1,167 yards of total offense in just two games. The Duck special teams and defense have also gotten into the scoring act having produced another 4 touchdowns of their own.

Best win so far: 48-13 drubbing of Tennessee in Knoxville.

2. Alabama Crimson Tide (2-0)
Points: 13.2

The defending National Champions look to have another smothering defense in 2010. The Tide have only given up two field goals in two games and forced 4 turnovers against Penn State in a match that never showed any serious threat of an upset.

Best win so far: 24-3 over Penn State.

3. California Golden Bears (2-0)
Points: 13.0

California got to be the first PAC-10 team to welcome Colorado to its new league. And, well, it wasn't exactly a cordial "hello." Berkeley has scored 104 points to their opposition's 10. Granted, Colorado and UC-Davis aren't exactly terrifying their opponents these days. But the Bears look more than ready for some stiffer competition down the road.

Best win so far: 52-7 over Colorado in a game that was already over a minute into the second quarter.

4. Iowa Hawkeyes (2-0)
Points: 12.6

The 2010 Hawkeyes look to be a repeat of the 2009 club that smashed Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl. Except, this year, Iowa isn't merely sneaking past lesser opponents. They're beating them into submission.

Best win so far: 35-7 over Iowa State

5. Ohio State Buckeyes (2-0)
Points: 12.2

Destroy opening-week cupcake. Check. Sidetrack the revival of a fallen powerhouse. Check. Send out Heisman-flyers for third-year starting quarterback. Check. The Buckeyes are the early favorite to challenge Bama for this year's BCS crown. So far, so good. If Miami proves to be as advertised in the preseason, Saturday's 12-point win in the Horseshoe should pay dividends for Ohio State down the road in these power rankings.

Best win so far: 36-24 over the Hurricanes.

6. Nebraska Cornhuskers (2-0)
Points: 12.1

The Cornhuskers have shown flashes of their 2009 defensive dominance and a much improved offensive output behind freshman quarterback Taylor Martinez. The California high school superstar gives Nebraska its first true running threat at quarterback since Jamal Lord in 2002. Martinez might even prove to be on par with Heisman-winner Eric Crouch.

Best win so far: 38-17 over Idaho.

7. Arizona Wildcats (2-0)
Points: 11.9

Nick Foles passes wild over a pair of season-opening creampuffs. The Wildcats will get a much stiffer test when Iowa comes to Tucson on Saturday.

Best win so far: 41-2 on the road at Toledo.

8. Oklahoma Sooners (2-0)
Points 11.7

Would the real Oklahoma please stand up?

Against Florida State, the Sooners looked like the offensive juggernaut that played for a BCS crown in 2008. Against WAC doormat Utah State, Oklahoma showed shades of last season's disappointing 8-5 run. Who is the real Oklahoma in 2010? We need more data to figure it out. The Florida State win is the stuff of Top 5 teams. But the struggle against the Aggies keeps the Sooners off the top tier for now.

Best win so far: 47-17 curb-stomp of Florida State.

9. Florida Gators (2-0)
Points: 11.2

The Gators needed some thievery by the defense to stave off Miami of Ohio in the most lackluster offensive performance seen in Gainsville in decades. Dub it a wake-up call. Whatever it was, the Gators were much improved against a better opponent in the South Florida Bulls. Still, the post-Tebow era could prove a little rocky for Florida fans in the outset.

Best win so far: 38-14 over South Florida

10. Texas Longhorns (2-0)
Points: 11.0

Texas rounds out the Top 10 with two solid (if not particularly impressive) wins over lower competition. A trip to Lubbock this coming weekend should tell us a lot more about the 2009 BCS runners-up's chances for another stellar performance in 2010.

Best win so far: 34-7 over Wyoming.

The best of the rest:

11. Houston Cougars
Points: 10.5

12. Texas A&M Aggies
Points: 10.2

13. Missouri Tigers
Points 10.0

14. Texas Christian Horned Frogs
Points: 9.9

15. Arkansas Razorbacks
Points: 9.4

16. Stanford Cardinal
Points: 9.0

17.Air Force Falcons
Points: 8.2

18. South Carolina Gamecocks
Points: 8.0

19. Nevada Wolfpack
Points: 6.5

20. Wisconsin Badgers
Points: 6.3

Note: Boise State did not make these power rankings due to having played only one game so far. Virginia Tech's loss to James Madison also did not help the Broncos' in the transitive category.
