Tony Romo is coming off a good season. Romo threw for over 4,000 yards, with 26 touchdowns. Romo cut his interceptions down to nine last season. The line must do a better job protecting Romo. He was sacked 34 times. Some of the blame goes to Romo. He holds the ball to the last second. Sometimes this helps him make great plays, but it also makes Tony Romo harder to pass block for. Jon Kitna is the back-up for Romo. Kitna knows the offense, and is a solid signal caller who can step in, on a moments notice.
The Dallas Cowboys offense has two fine runners. Marion Barber is a bruising back, who delivers the hit at contact. He ran for 932 yards, with 7 touchdowns last year. Felix Jones is the other back. I look for Jones to see much more time this year. Jones ran for over 5 yards per carry last season. He is a quick, slashing runner. The Cowboys may feature Jones in the running game, and use Barber for the tough yardage. Having two backs with their ability makes the Dallas Cowboy passing attack all the more dangerous. Barber and Jones both could rush for 1,000 yards.
Miles Austin turned into one of the best receivers in football last season. He caught 81 passes last season, gaining 1,320 yards. Austin scored 11 touchdowns for the Cowboys last year. Terrell Owens is a name of the past for Cowboy fans. Miles Austin has made T.O. a distant memory. Roy Williams will start alongside Austin. Williams hasn't reached his expected potential. All signs say that if Williams doesn't have a good year, he will be sent packing. Williams had 7 touchdowns last year, but had many drops. Williams showed up to camp in great shape, and is working his butt off. First round draft pick Dez Bryant will push Williams. Bryant was the class at receiver in the draft. Mistakes made in college lowered his draft status, but his talent is apparent. Bryant hurt his ankle in practice, and will miss most of the preseason. Look for Dez Bryant to give the Dallas Cowboy offense a big lift, especially in the second half of the season. Patrick Clayton is a solid reserve receiver for Dallas. At tight end, Jason Witten will have another solid year. Witten can be counted on for the tough third down catches over the middle. When Romo is in trouble, Witten is his bailout. The Dallas Cowboy offense has the best receivers in the NFC East, by a wide margin. This hasn't been the case since the Michael Irvin days.
The Dallas Cowboy offensive line is minus Flozell Adams. Dallas will try to replace the large left tackle, with Doug Free or Alex Baron. Either one will have large shoes to fill. The rest of the Dallas line is in tact. Left guard Kyle Kosier will be asked to make holes for the Cowboy running backs. Kosier is much better blocking for the run, rather than pass blocking. He has the speed to get out on sweeps. Center Andre Gurade and right guard Leonard Davis are both good at pass blocking. Rounding out the line is right tackle Marc Colombo. The line will take some time to deal with the loss of Adams, but should work most of the kinks out in the preseason. Depth is a weakness when it comes to the offensive line. Montrae Holland and Pat McQuistan are the top back-ups, but they lack the skill to be counted on for long stretches.
