2010 Delaware Special Election to Replace Biden's Senate Seat

Here Are the Candidates for the Delaware Senate Race

Jay Braun
Joe Biden won a seventh term in the United States Senate in 2008 when he easily defeated Republican challenger Christie O'Donnell. When Barack Hussein Obama was elected president, Biden was required by Article I Section 6 of the United States Constitution to step down from the Senate. He was sworn in for his seventh term and then resigned. Delaware Gov. Ruth Ann Minner appointed Ted Kaufman to fill the term until the special election could be held in November. Unlike a typical Senate election the winner will take the office immediately upon the results of the have been certified. The winner will then complete the remainder of the six year term.

Unlike some states Delaware does not have a crowded primary field for either the Democratic or Republican parties. For all intensive purposes the Republicans will nominate Rep. Mike Castle, and the Democrats will nominate New Castle County Commissioner Christopher Coons. There was quite a bit of speculation that Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden, son of Joe Biden, would run for the seat. He decided not to and to focus on his job as attorney general. I am sure part of this was because of the fact that he knew there would not be much of a likelihood of a victory. There have been reports that former Republican Senatorial candidate Christie O'Donnell may seek the nomination. I personally believe it is very unlikely she will. For this article I am going to focus on the election being between Chris Coons and Mike Castle since there really will not be any primary. Even if Christie O'Donnell does run, it really won't be much of a contest.

I do think that Michael Castle will win the general election. He is very moderate compared to many Republicans. He is pro-choice, voted against impeachment for Bill Clinton and is moderate on many social issues. He is generally a fiscal conservative on budget issues. He voted against the stimulus bill and also was a firm no on the healthcare vote. He is often referred to as a RINO, which means Republican In Name Only. He also has plenty of experience. He was a two-term governor of Delaware and has been elected to the U.S. House of Representatives 10 times.

I have personally voted for Chris Coons for the New Castle Country positions that he has held. He and Castle are very similar on many issues like abortion and social justice, but Coons is a bit more of a spender. Christopher Coons is also a more partisan than Michael Castle is. After Barack Hussein Obama bullied Obamacare through against the will of the American people, I don't believe many are anxious to give him another blank check vote. Delaware is a very blue state. The fact that Castle is moderate and his extensive experience will be what carries him to a win. I think America is getting fed up with the tax and spend philosophy of one party politics under Obama. This also helps Castle in his quest for the Senate seat. I don't think Coons should have run. He is a very good person and civil servant who does not really have a shot in this election. If I were advising him I would have told him to seek the U.S. House seat that Castle will be vacating.

I personally am a registered Democrat and have voted for both of these candidates. I believe any vote for a Democrat this year though is a vote to let Obama keep doing things that he has been doing against the will of the American people. I have contemplated dropping my party affiliation after the Obamacare vote, but I am voting Republican a vast majority of the time in the next couple years unless there is a really good conservative Democrat that does not believe in whatever Obama wants he gets, or "We need to give him a win."

I stopped reading with "For all intensive purposes". I make it a practice to avoid subliterate writings by folks whose reading has been limited to other subliterates.

"For all intents and purposes" won't elicit the guffaws of derision that "for all intensive purposes" [insert snorts and guffaws here] from readers who are slightly well-read.
