Even better were Gervais' comments about the American version of "The Office" and Steve Carell. He explained to all that he was the original office ass (oh, he has a show about it too!). Steve Carell sat stone faced in his audience seat until miming, "I will kill you" at Gervais.
On to the awards:
Nicole Kidman came out first to read the norminations for Best Supporting Actress - Movie. Before she did so, Kidman told the audience the ribbons all were wearing were "Ribbons for Haiti". She also said George Clooney has put together a fund raising telethon for next week called "Hope for Haiti".

Paul McCartney came out to present the next award. Seemed like a strange category, but what do you do with an icon like Sir Paul? He even introduced himself for the... no one that didn't know him in the room (or world). McCartney made it more clear why this was the perfect category for him to present, "Animation is not just for children, it's also for adults who take drugs."

Felicity Huffman came out to introduce a member of the Golden Globe panel (or something). Hard to really say why she was there, Ricky Gervais apparently inadvertently introduced the gentleman. Huffman came out and promptly forgot all her lines. Was so flustered she asked to start over (not going to happen on live TV), she attempted to pick it back up and things only got worse. It was not a complete train wreck, she didn't call him names.

*Puts on best Simon Cowell voice* Sorry, I just don't get this guy, he's forgettable. I really think I would enjoy the show "Dexter" if a better guy were playing this role. OK, I admit a severe bias for Hugh Laurie.

Ricky Gervais took the stage again, with a drink in his hand this time. "I'm not gonna lie to ya, I've had a couple" said Gervais, "...and who knows more about that then Mel Gibson?" Great line, and got a roar from the crowd. Gibson took the stage on cue and acted like he too had had at least one as he said, "I'm here to talk about the inglorious bastards, I mean the directors."

The guys from "The Hangover" came out to introduce it for Best Movie Comedy. Mike Tyson took the stage with the rest of the crew. This just looks like the goofy group of guys in your local neighborhood bar.

Sandra Bullock - The Blind Side - Winner

Carey Mulligan - An Education
Gabourey Sidibe - Precious: Based On The Novel Push By Sapphire
This was a shocker for me, I like Sandra Bullock, but thought sure Gaboury Sidibe would win the award tonight.

Matt Damon - The Informant!
Daniel Day-Lewis - Nine
Robert Downey Jr. - Sherlock Holmes - Winner
Joseph Gordon-Levitt - (500) Days Of Summer
Michael Stuhlbarg - A Serious Man
"If you start playing violins, I swear to God I will tear this place apart..." Downey went on to "not thank" all of the people who have helped him along his career ("they needed me!") I don't personally see what others do in Robert Downey Jr.'s work, but he must be good. I knew he would win this award.
2010 Golden Globe: Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama
Jeff Bridges - Crazy Heart - Winner
George Clooney - Up In The Air
Colin Firth - A Single Man
Morgan Freeman - Invictus
Tobey Maguire - Brothers
Another sneaker from the sleeper of the year (at this point) from the movie "Crazy Heart". The movie got great reviews, it's just not the blockbuster type. Good for Bridges who said to his rousing applause, "...you're screwing up my 'under appreciated' status...". Jeff thanked his mom and dad (Lloyd Bridges) and even went so far as to thank his stand-in Lloyd. Nice to hear a truly thankful person.
Julia Roberts read the nominees for Best Motion Picture - Drama. She told us that if you want to get attention, just sit next to Paul McCartney. "I've never gotten so many texts in my life!"
2010 Golden Globe: Best Motion Picture - Drama
Avatar
Lightstorm Entertainment; Twentieth Century Fox - Winner
The Hurt Locker

Precious: Based On The Novel Push By Sapphire
A Lee Daniels Entertainment / Smokewood Entertainment Group Production; Lionsgate
Up In The Air
Paramount Pictures; Paramount Pictures
No surprises where the main event was going. Most had bowed down to the great James Cameron already. There were no real acting awards available for the mega-hit movie "Avatar", it's all about the special effects. I would have loved to have seen "Precious" or "Up In The Air" win.
That wraps up the second award show of the year. Next up are the Grammy's, see you here with the winners list.
