For weeks ahead of time, a few performances were advertised again and again. Viewers got to vote for which song Bon Jovi sang for their first Grammy performance ever ("Living on a Prayer"). Viewers could send in videos to be played during the omnipresent Black Eyed Peas performance, though it was difficult to see any of the videos. And, of course, Target was providing 3-D glasses for the Michael Jackson tribute, which was a performance of "The Earth Song" by Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson, Smokey Robinson, Carrie Underwood, and Usher. Following the performance, Jackson's children came out to thank the fans and to assure them that they would follow in their father's philanthropic footsteps.
Lady Gaga added to her flamboyant nature by doing a duet with Sir Elton John, who is notorious for surprising Grammy duets (Anyone remember Eminem?). Other notable big performances included Beyonce, Pink dangling from a trapeeze, the ubiquitous Black Eyed Peas and Slash joining Jay-Z and Jamie Foxx. Green Day performed music from their upcoming Broadway production. Dave Matthews brought out about 50 extra performers for his band's set. The name of the game this year was to be as big and theatrical as possible. Only a handful of awards were actually passed out live this year. They are listed first.
Many awards were passed out ahead of time. As that list is highly extensive, winners only are listed following the presenters, performers, and awards from the live broadcast.
