At least metal legend Rob Halford of Judas Priest fame showed up (for some reason) to keep it relatively old school for the head bangers. Mariah Carey looked stunned walking the red carpet in a severely low cut, too tight number that accentuated her growing assets (does this woman not have a stylist?) and increasing lack of taste.
But seriously, why was the cast of "Mad Men" there? And is there a new law on the books stating that musicians may only wear suits that are either silver or shiny? Perhaps that is why the Grammy's invited the cast of "Mad Men"-so they could give wardrobe advice to some of the younger male musicians.
The most attention, red carpet wardrobe wise, was given to none other than Lady Gaga. And no, it wasn't because she was wearing a live owl on her head (although she might one day). It was because she let her face remain relatively uncovered by her glittery coil dress so we could all see that there was actually a pretty girl underneath. Yes, her make-up was a bit over the top but maybe this will finally put all the "is she a he?" rumors to rest for the fiercely talented Lady Gaga.
I will also give the 2010 Grammy's credit for their choice of opening act. Lady Gaga performed a duet with Elton John of her highly Elton-esque "Speechless" mashed with his classic "Your Song." It sounded a little unrehearsed and there were no costumed monsters making gestures in the background but it was from the heart and real. Even with the glittery Glam-Rock fabulous glasses the duo were wearing when they got on stage.
But who will win the big prizes? As of this writing the only major award given out was Song of the Year (which honors songwriters) to Beyonce for her supernova smash hit "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)." I have to say I agree with the Grammy voters on that count as that song will be a once in a career-size hit for Lady B and is a pure pop culture phenomenon.
As for Album of the Year, I can't say that her double album "I am...Sasha Fierce" deserves the same accolade. But who knows? Grammy awards, like many stars fashion taste on the red carpet, are often times misguided attempts to look youthful, cool and trendy. I just hope someone restrains Kanye West if Taylor Swift wins.
