The future is bright for Brandon Phelps, a high school football player who is considered one of the best players in the state of Maryland. The Damascus, MD, senior is a 5'11 175lb cornerback, who is rated as a four star prospect by ESPN. Rivals.com ranks Brandon Phelps as the third best prospect in the state of Maryland. They also rank him as a four star prospect as an athlete. Brandon is ranked as an athlete because he has talent as a receiver as well. Phelps should be a player to watch for Damascus in 2010. Damascus is a high school football in Maryland. Lead by Brandon Phelps Damascus should content for a conference title and should be in the mix for a state championship.

Strengths

Brandon Phelps has several strengths for a football player as one would expect from a four star prospect. Brandon can play both defense and offense positions as he plays cornerback and receiver. He is talented at both positions. Brandon is a threat for the deep bomb as a receiver or a hard hitting corner on defense. Phelps is considered a better receiver or corner back than any other high school player in the state. ESPN states "he has BCS level talent on both sides of the ball which makes him very attractive." "Phelps is a wonderful athlete with a terrific blend of size, speed and fluid change-of-direction" is the way ESPN describes his gifts. Rivals.com reports his speed down to 4.4 in the forty. Brandon is considered a top 200 high school football prospect in the country by Rivals.com. In his own words Phelps told Scout.com "I feel like I'm pretty smooth with my route-running and I can make great cuts. I have good ball skills when the ball is in the air and can position myself well to get it." Brandon plays at Damascus which is recognized as a football power in Maryland. Playing for a winning team is always a plus. Besides football, Brandon Phelps has great academics with a 3.6 GPA. His academic success in high school should help prepare him for college.

Weaknesses

He will need to continue to work on his speed for the next level. As a high school player Phelps has few weaknesses. Phelps will want to continue to work on his strength and prepare for his football future at the next level. Brandon acknowledges he has some things to work on. "I want to get faster and improve my change of direction" is what he told Scout.com. The competition Phelps faces for playing time at the BCS level will be higher than high school. His future BGS opponents will be much stronger and faster as well.

His future

Barring injury Damascus and Brandon Phelps should have an outstanding season. Phelps should be able to add to his impressive highlight videos available on YouTube. Damascus should be able to contend for conference and state championships. Phelps should be garnered with several awards. According to Scout.com Brandon Phelps has already been selected to play in the prestigious Crab Bowl. Josh Barr has reported "Damascus DB Brandon Phelps picks Virginia" as his college choice. Brandon Phelps was also considered Virginia Tech, Penn State, Ohio State, Notre Dame and Alabama. Scout.com reports there was an offer from LSU as well. The Cavaliers probably had some help from Brandon's dad Gary "who played at Virginia" according to Josh Barr. Phelps should be a talented freshman addition to the Virginia Cavaliers in 2011. Phelps will bring his offensive talent, his defensive talent, and will probably develop special teams skills at Virginia. Being able to play offense, defense and special teams should improve Brandon's chances of getting playing time at the next level.
