The analysis is based on records going back to 1880. Records not only show June to be a record breaker but also the warmest January to June period ever recorded.
Land and ocean surface combined total temperature shows June 2010 to be the warmest on record. June 2010 had a worldwide average temperature of slightly over 61 degrees Fahrenheit, over one degree higher than the 20th century average of 59.9 degrees Fahrenheit.
Large areas facing warmer than average temperatures dominated the globe during June. Peru, eastern and western Asia, and central and eastern United States suffered the most above-average heat.
Worldwide affects include severe droughts in Thailand, Britain, Russia and Israel. Russia is suffering the worst drought in 130 years. Millions of acres of crops have already been lost. The first six months have been the driest in Britain since 1929; rainfall was nearly six inches below average.
Other affects of the heat wave include forest fires, melting roads, and deaths across Europe. In the Arctic Ocean, sea ice is melting at an alarming rate with glacier ice becoming thinner and thinner. However, Antarctic sea ice extent was 8.3 percent above average.
2010 may escape breaking 2005 records and becoming the hottest on record. Ocean surface temperatures are decreasing across the equatorial Pacific Ocean. The period of warm, dry El Nino seems to be coming to an end. NOAA's Climate Prediction Center is expecting cooler La Nina conditions to develop over the northern hemisphere during the remaining summer months of 2010. Come on fall!

I can feel it. I can't imagine living any further south. Nicely written article. :-)
I can be part of the anecdotal evidence to say that Pennsylvania has been one darn hot steam bath lately.
I hated it we didn't have a true June -- still, I must admit, my garden has prospered because of it. I had to water, but other than that, crops are ahead of schedule, and may produce a bumper crop.
We've just started our 'dog days of summer' weather. Nice report.
Appreciate all the information. It has been hot around here.
nice work on this one!
Wow I would believe it. It has been so hot here already.
Here in the northeast, we've been having long heat waves and water restrictions to boot! It's really hot around here.
Very interesting. I ready for fall already. It's my favorite season.
