2010 Iowa Senate Poll Show Tightening Between Grassley and Conlin

Wapello, Iowa -- KCCI and The Des Moines Register are having a field day with Sen. Charles Grassley and his likely Democrat opponent, Roxanne Conlin. KCCI conducted a poll from 5/3-5/5 of 600 likely voters. They found that Grassley has lost some of his lead. By the KCCI poll, Grassley has 49% of the vote to Roxanne Conlin's 40%.

There has been much made of this poll. But one has to wonder what Charles Grassley did that made his numbers drop so drastically in two days. The well-known Rasmussen poll, done on 5/3, has Grassley leading Conlin 53% to 40%. With no stories or scandals hitting the air ways or newspapers, it is hard to feature a loss of 4% in two days for Grassley.

The KCCI poll has hit the blogs, and it's not hard to see what the game plan is. The Democrat Party has thrown its preference behind Conlin and has decided to make the push against Grassley with her. Leaving behind two other candidates Krause and Fiegen. Why? Out of the three Democrats running, Conlin does poll the best against Grassley. Grassley leads by large numbers in both male and female voters except when running against Conlin, who is within five points of Grassley with women.

This polling data begs the question: Can Charles Grassley be beaten in 2010? It is this Iowans belief that the answer is no. Grassley will win. Why? Below are the reasons I believe he'll be sent back to Washington, D.C.

First, I don't know of ANY other senator who spends more time back home "talking" to his constituents. I have been to at least three town hall meetings to listen to him this year. He was having town hall meetings years before they became popular.

If you ask the senator a question and he doesn't know the answer, he WILL get back to you with it. His staff is top-notch and they work as hard as the senator when it comes to communication and helping Iowans with their problems. The help he offers is to all Iowans, not just Republican supporters. I have seen many independents and Democrats at his town hall meetings.

Iowans don't worry about picking up the paper or turning on the TV and learning about some scandal involving Charles Grassley. If you listen to him talk at his town hall meetings, you get a sense of what this man is all about.

Grassley lives in Iowa. He is PROUD of being an Iowan. He treats the "little guy" as well as he treats the well-known people. And he is constantly in Iowa talking to Iowans about what they want and need. He also has had to defend his positions taken in Washington. He will explain WHY he voted the way he did. Oddly enough, sometimes a vote hinged upon what was hidden in a bill and he couldn't vote the way I wanted because of that hidden addition. This a cracker jack staff that works for Iowans too.
