2010 Lincoln MKZ - Automobile Review

Eric Loveday
The Lincoln lineup of vehicles is much improved over previous offerings from the company. The MKZ benefits from many of the updates found on the nearly identical Ford Fusion, an offering from Ford that has garnered a tremendous amount of sales and has even earned numerous awards. Differentiating the Lincoln MKZ from the Ford Fusion is not all that difficult as the Lincoln's approach and focus on luxury touches throughout is immediately evident. Though the Lincoln MKZ is little more than a fancied up Ford Fusion, it offers several improvements both inside and out that make it worthy of consideration in the entry level luxury vehicle class.

The Lincoln MKZ starts at a base price of $34,115. This price is considerably higher than a Ford Fusion. However, the MKZ comes with only the up level engine offering which is a 3.5 liter V6 that churns out 263 hp. The V6 engine is connected to the sole transmission choice a 6 speed automatic transmissions. An MKZ is available with either front wheel drive or all wheel drive and comes in sedan version only.

Options for the MKZ are limited. Most of the usual optional items are standard fare on all MKZ models. The only additional ad on options most buyers would select include a moon roof and HID headlights. At least this model offers a significant amount of standard features for its elevated price.

The interior of the MKZ is below average for its price. Offering from competitors features higher quality materials and better fit and finish throughout. The vehicle has a confusing array of buttons that make operating simple controls quite difficult. Inside, some nice touches include a tilting and telescoping steering wheel and a sliding center armrest which can be adjusted depending upon your seat location. The front seats offer good support and features power adjustments.

On the exterior, the MKZ is freshened over its predecessor. The new vehicle looks more modern than previous Lincoln models and takes on the appearance of Japanese luxury vehicles such as Lexus models. Driving the MKZ is rewarding. The powerful engine is very responsive, the ride is well controlled, and the handling is more than acceptable. The powerful engine manages to return 20 mpg in normal driving conditions. The MKZ has communicative, responsive steering that makes the vehicle feel sporty and confident.

For a significant premium in price over its sibling the Ford Fusion, the Lincoln MKZ offers a host of upgrades. The interior materials, though sub par for its class, are much improved over the Fusion. The responsive engine, long list of standard features and sport demeanor of the vehicle make it a solid entry in the luxury field. Although not quite up to par with competitors from Japan, the MKZ offers a budget alternative to entry level luxury models from European marques.
