In 2001 the tournament doubled its total amount of qualifying teams from 8 to 16, with 8 teams coming from the United States, and 8 coming from other countries. The 16 teams qualifying teams are then divided into two brackets, the United States Bracket, and the International Bracket. Each team is then randomly assigned to one of two pools were they compete against each other, leaving the top 2 teams in each pool, to advance to the elimination tournament. The 1st place teams then play the 2nd place teams from the other pool in their respective bracket, with the two winners advancing to the semifinal round, which is also known as the United States and International Championships games. The U.S. champion and the International champion, then advance to the Little League World Series Championship Game, and their shot at being crowned the best little league team in the world.
