2010 Major League Baseball Preview: The New York Yankees

Mike Spain
The New York Yankees won the World Series last year over the Philadelphia Phillies. The question now is can the New York Yankees repeat? The Yankees pay the money to compete and no team in the major leagues has won as many titles as the Yankees. The Yankees lost some players in the off season. New York also brought in new players via free agency.

Losses:

The Yankees lost left fielder Johnny Damon and designated hitter Hideki Matsui to free agency and then the Yankees traded away centerfielder Melky Cabrera according to Fox Sports. Fox also reports the Yankees let Jose Molina go.

Gains:

Fox Sports reports the Yankees picked up first baseman Nick Johnson who will probably get most of his at bats as a designated hitter. According to Fox the Yankees acquired centerfielder Curtis Granderson and pitcher Javier Vazquez .

Pitching:

The addition of Vazquez greatly improves the Yankees starting rotation over the starting staff the Yankees brought into the playoffs last season. CC Sabathia, A.J Burnett, and Andy Pettitte, Javier Vazquez, and Hughes are a solid rotation. If Hughes should falter than Chamberlain is ready to take his place. The Yankees bullpen looks to be as strong as it was last season.

Infield:

The Yankees starting infield stays in place.

Outfield

The Yankees outfield is shuffled. Curtis Granderson is probably an upgrade in center. It looks like the Yankees are going to go with Brett Gardner to replace Damon. New York takes a drop in left. Swisher will return in right for New York.

Designated Hitters ad Bench

Nick Johnson will replaceHideki Matsui as the designated hitter. This is probably a step down for New York. Francisco Cervelli we replace Molina as the backup catcher. The Yankees swapped their bench around as well but should be about the same.

Outlook

The Yankees should contend for a playoff spot and with an improved pitching rotation would be a dangerous team. The Yankees got a bit younger and lost a little on offense. However, they have to be one of the early favorites to go to the World Series.
