2010 at the Movies: Guild Award Nominations

Directors (DGA), Cinematographers (ASC), Screenwriters (WGA), Actors (SAG)

The 2011 Awards season is brewing and there are no big surprises from the various Filmmaking Guilds. The Directors Guild, American Society of Cinematographers, Writers Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild have all announced their nominees from 2010. Given that most of these industry professionals are also the ones voting on Oscars, it's a good indication of the 2011 Academy Award Nominees.

The 2010 Directors Guild of America (DGA) Award Nominees
Darren Aronofsky for "Black Swan" - First DGA Nomination
David Fincher for "The Social Network" - Nominated for "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"
Tom Hooper for "The King's Speech" - Nominated for "John Adams" in Television/Miniseries
Christopher Nolan for "Inception" - Nominated for "The Dark Knight" and "Memento"
David O. Russell for "The Fighter" First DGA Nomination

The winner will be announced January 29, 2011.

The 2010 American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Award Nominees
Matthew Libatique for "Black Swan" - First ASC Nomination
Wally Pfister for "Inception" - Nominated for "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight"
Danny Cohen for "The King's Speech" - First ASC Nomination
Jeff Cronenweth for "The Social Network" - First ASC Nomination
Roger Deakins for "True Grit" - Ninth ASC Nomination

Roger Deakins will be presented with the 2011 ASC Lifetime Achievement Award.
Winner will be announced February 13, 2011

The 2010 Writers Guild of America (WGA) Award Nominees
Nominees for Original Screenplay:
"Black Swan": Mark Heyman, Andres Heinz and John McLaughlin
"The Fighter": Scott Silver, Keith Dorrington, Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson
"Inception": Christopher Nolan
"The Kids Are All Right": Lisa Cholodenko and Stuart Blumberg
"Please Give": Nicole Holofcener

Nominees for Adapted Screenplay
"127 Hours": Danny Boyle and Simon Beaufoy (Between a Rock and a Hard Place)
"I Love You Phillip Morris": John Requa and Glenn Ficarra (Roadside Attractions)
"The Social Network": Aaron Sorkin (The Accidental Billionaires)
"The Town": Peter Craig, Ben Affleck and Aaron Stockard (Prince of Thieves)
"True Grit": Joel and Ethan Coen (True Grit)

Winners will be announced February 5, 2011.

The 2010 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award Nominees
While SAG has not released their official nominee list, they did release a list of films with performances that are nominated for 2010.

"127 Hours": Most likely Best Actor for James Franco
"Black Swan": Probably Natalie Portman for Best Actress, Mila Kunis or Barbara Hershey for Supporting "Conviction": Could be Hillary Swank for Best or Sam Rockwell, Minnie Driver or Melissa Leo Supporting
"The Fighter": Mark Wahlberg for Best, but more likely Christian Bale for Supporting, though both Amy Adams and Melissa Leo give solid performances in a Supporting Role.
"Get Low": Robert Duvall for Best, but also Bill Murray or Sissy Spacek for Supporting.
"The Kids Are All Right": Annette Bening for Best Actress
"The King's Speech": Colin Firth for Best, but also Geoffrey Rush or Helena Bonham Carter in Supporting
"Rabbit Hole": Nicole Kidman for Best and Aaron Eckhart or Dianne Wiest for Supporting
"The Social Network": Jesse Eisenberg for Best, but big hopes for Andrew Garfield in Supporting
"The Town": My bet's on the supporting roles of Rebecca Hall, Jeremy Renner, Blake Lively or Pete Postlethwaite. "True Grit": Hailee Steinfeld for Best, but its anyone's game for supporting - Bridges, Damon or Brolin
"Winter's Bone": Most of the Critics will be pulling for Jennifer Lawrence in Best, but John Hawkes has a chance for Supporting as well.

    Interesting that Coen was overlooked by DGA. What's the deal with that, I wonder.
