2010 NBA Draft: Detroit Pistons Draft Needs

JM Van Horn
Even though the NBA playoffs are in full swing, there are a handful of teams who have already started to look towards the 2010 NBA draft. One of those teams is the Detroit Pistons, who missed out on the playoffs for the first time in awhile.

Thanks to their lack luster season, the Pistons find themselves with a top ten draft pick in the 2010 NBA draft. Though they will miss out on impact guards like John Wall or Evan Turner, the Pistons have to chance to select a player who can address their biggest need, size along the front line.

During the 2009-2010 season, the Pistons lacked a dominant player at the power forward position. While the Pistons found a solid player in rookie Jones Jerebko, his abilities tend to suit the small forward position better.

There are three players in the 2010 NBA draft who could come in and make an impact at the power forward position.

DeMarcus Cousins - Kentucky

Of the group, Cousins will receive the most attention and is more likely to be already drafted by the time the Pistons are on the clock. If he is around, they would be foolish to look past a player who can use his muscle to own the paint and average 15 points and 10 rebounds as a rookie.

Patrick Patterson - Kentucky

Often the forgotten player at Kentucky thanks to the performance of Cousins and Wall, Patterson developed into a more complete player during his third season in the college ranks. Patterson may not be the flashiest but will be a long time player in the NBA.

Ed Davis - North Carolina

This sophomore power forward may not be as polished like others at his position but he did show the athleticism in college that would fit in the Pistons scheme.

Another area of need for the Pistons that can be addressed in the 2010 NBA draft is the point guard position. The team relies on Rodney Stuckey to lead the team on the floor when he is better suited for the scoring role.

The Pistons could find a sleeper in the 2010 NBA draft by taking a look at the following player in the second round.

Sherron Collins - Kansas

In the college ranks, Collins should his ability to control the tempo of the game and use his ball handling skills to lead his team. While he showcased his ability to score more often in college, Collins should develop in a quality point guard in the NBA.
