2010 NBA Draft Preview: DeMarcus Cousins

Kentucky Wildcat Freshman Should Be One of the First Big Man Selected

Mike Spain
ESPN's Chad Ford considers DeMarcus Cousins as the best center and the fourth best player in the 200 NBA draft. DeMarcus is a big man at 6'11 and 260lb. The freshman Cousins averaged 15.8 points and 9.8 rebounds per game for the Kentucky Wildcats last season. The 19 year old has the physical tools, the upswing of youth, and a year of high caliber college basketball under his belt. The question is can he handle the NBA?

Strengths

1) DeMarcus Cousins has the upswing of youth being 19. He has the chance to develop into star and have a long successful career.

2) NBAdraft.net states Cousin has "great hands and soft touch."

3) "NBA teams will love his offensive presence in the post, along with his rebounding and shot blocking abilities" according to NBA draft.net

Weaknesses

1) DeMarcus Cousins will turn 20 at the start of the NBA season. While youth has the upswing advantage it also comes with a downside. Cousin only has one year of college experience, and his maturity level may not be ready for the NBA.

2) NBA Draft, net states "Cousins' lack of maturity and mental focus is evident in his negative body language and lack of composure."

3) Another "concern with him right now is the lack of explosiveness." Everyone knows the NBA is faster than college, a longer season, and a longer game. Will his lack of explosiveness hurt him on the fastbreak or getting back on defense?

Probable Team

As a solid big man in the draft and a top five rate player, DeMarcus could go anywhere in the top six slots of the draft. The first pick appears to be locked down with his teammate Walls going to the Wizards. The best place for Cousins would be on a team where he could be coached. He needs to work on his explosiveness, his fundamentals, and to the NBA game. The teams could be Philadelphia, New Jersey, Minnesota, Sacramento, and Golden State. In my opinion Doug Collins at Philadelphia could be a good coach for DeMarcus and Don Nelson at Golden State could help Cousins.

For Kentucky, this is a draft-rich class. Good work again Mike.
