2010 NBA Draft: Washington Wizards Needs

The Wizards Need Almost Everything

Mike Spain
The Washington Wizards have a ton of questions to ponder before next season. Among them will Gilbert Arenas be a part of the team? Can the Wizards trade him? How will the rest of the Wizards roster look? Washington has room under the salary cup and looks to be a player in the free agency market as well. According to Fox Sports "Washington has just five players signed to contracts next season."

The Washington Wizards have three drafts picks. A lottery pick and Cleveland's pick in the first round and the Wizards pick in the second round. Assuming the Wizards don't get the number one pick I think the Wizards should go for a big man like Kentucky's DeMarcus Cousins or Kansas Cole Aldrich. Washington would have a center to go with their guards to build around. The Wizards would use their own pick to grab their center.

In the lower part of the draft Washington could still go for whoever the best prospect is and perhaps that is how the Wizards should approach this draft. If the Wizards had any luck, they could add a forward like Damian Patterson out of Texas. The 6'8 224lb small forward has good size, averaged 18 points and 10.3 rebounds per game, and was a senior. The Wizards would be well on their way with a center and forward.

The Wizards should use their last pick for the best player available. Everyone Washington selects should have the potential to start or at least compete for significant playing time. Rookies who want to play hope to be selected by a team like Washington. Unfortunately, the Wizards are not in a position to let people develop and bring them along slowly. However, the pressure to win won't be their next season for the Wizards unless Washington picks up a lot of high quality free agent players. The Wizards have a lot to decide before next season and watching them in the draft should be fun.

some how the Wizards got the first pick, so it looks like John Wall if they keep the pick and forwards and centers with pick 30 and 35

Maybe I'll get done returning comments before we go to Conroe, TX on Thursday (and then I'll probably have tons more after that!)

I too Mike think this draft will be fun to watch. A lot of one-and-doners with this draft, perhaps due to the potential lock-out of the NBA in the following year. Nice review friend.
