2010 NCAA Softball World Series Day Two, Washington and Florida Upset

Ryan Christopher DeVault
2010 NCAA Softball World Series results from Day One were a bit surprising. The 2010 NCAA Softball World Series has already seen powerhouses Washington and Florida fall on the first day of competition, showing why this is a double-elimination tournament for college softball. The first day of play was Thursday, June 3, when all eight teams began their journey through the two different brackets. All four of the games can be deemed upsets, as the lower seeded team won each of the four games. What that means is that there will be some ultra-competitive games in the losers' bracket, and that there could be two Cinderella stories developing in the 2010 NCAA Softball World Series.

Game 1 yesterday was Missouri vs. Hawaii and the same Hawaii team that upset No. 1 seed Alabama in the Tuscaloosa Regional hit a two-run home run in the last inning to beat Missouri. In the other game from that bracket, UCLA absolutely crushed No. 4 seed Florida (16-3 in six innings), sending UCLA to a game against Hawaii on Friday. It also means that a Missouri vs. Florida game will be the first elimination game of the tournament on Saturday.

Over in the other bracket, the first game was between eight-time national champion Arizona and Tennessee. Tennessee got to the College World Series by upsetting No. 2 seeded Michigan, and proved they belong with an impressive 9-0 win over Arizona on Thursday. The nightcap saw defending national champion Washington fall to the Georgia Bulldogs by a score of 6-3. Now this means that Tennessee will play Georgia on Friday, and Washington will play Arizona to see which team stays in the tournament.

The 2010 Softball World Series is shaping up much like the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, in that it is impossible to predict how this one is going to turn out. All eight teams still have a chance to win the 2010 National Championship, but it just became much harder for the four schools that find themselves in the loser's brackets. Of the four remaining teams that haven't lost, Tennessee was ranked No. 15 and Hawaii was ranked No. 16 coming into this tournament, making it equally impressive that both schools are still alive. This could very possibly be exactly what 10-time national champion UCLA was hoping for, as they suddenly become the favorite to make it from their bracket.

The four winners from Thursday will play on Friday, and then the loser's brackets will get started on Saturday.
