2010 NCAA Tournament Bubble Teams

Washington, Ole Miss, and Illinois Are on the NCAA Tourney Bubble

Jackson Lewis
Selection Sunday is coming up, and there are a number of teams that remain "on the bubble" for selection to an at-large bid to the 2010 NCAA Tournament. Fourteen of the automatic conference bids were determined by Wednesday, March 10th, with the remaining 17 automatic bids being determined between March 12th and March 14th. Some teams such as Seton Hall and UCONN entered the postseason with needing at least one and preferably more wins to solidify their position for the tourney and instead find themselves on the bubble of the 2010 NIT Tournament.

2010 NCAA Tournament Bubble Teams

2010 NCAA Tournament Bubble Team - Illinois

Illinois finished the season 18-13, 10-8 with a RPI of 75 and SOS of 40. The Illini pulled a Florida at the end of this season losing five of their last six games though. They are 4-8 against the RPI top 50 and 5-11 against the top 100. Illinois has beaten Vandy, Wisconsin, Michigan State, and Clemson so they have a good case for an at-large bid. Many believe they will need to beat Wisconsin again in the 2010 Big Ten tournament in order to be strong enough to obtain an at-large bid.

2010 NCAA Tournament Bubble Team - Washington

Washington is 21-9, 11-7 and has a RPI of 51 and SOS of 70. The Huskies worked their way back into the bubble with a four-game winning streak to finish the regular season. Depending on which bracketologist you believe, they will need to win one or more games in the PAC 10 tournament to make the NCAA tournament. They do have a few RPI top-50 wins to their credit beating Texas A&M and Cal at home, but they are only 6-5 against the RPI top 100.

2010 NCAA Tournament Bubble Team - Arizona State University

Arizona State finished the season 22-9, 12-6 with a RPI of 54 and SOS of 80. They won six of their final seven games but only have two wins against top 50 RPI opponents and two others against the top 100 (4-7 overall against the top 100). ASU is the #2 seed in the PAC-10 tourney, so they will need at least 1-2 wins in the conference tourney to solidify their position for an at-large NCAA tournament bid.

2010 NCAA Tournament Bubble Team - Minnesota

Minnesota has worked their way onto the NCAA Tournament bubble finishing the season at 18-12, 9-9 with an RPI of 78 and SOS of 49. Minnesota finished the season 4-4 in their final 8 games and beat Illinois on the road in late February 62-60. They are 3-6 against the RPI top 50 and 4-7 against the top 100. Minnesota will likely need a strong Big Ten tournament showing to make the NCAA Tourney.

2010 NCAA Tournament Bubble Team - Ole Miss

Ole Miss finished the season 21-9, 97 with a RPI of 56 and SOS of 85. They were swept by Mississippi State this year and lost at home against the Gators but finished the season 4-0. They did beat K State early in the season and UTEP 91-81 in December. The Rebels lost five games against the top 25 in the RPI. A strong showing in the 2010 SEC Tournament will give the Rebels a better case for an at-large bid.
