2010 NFL Draft; Detroit Lions Needs

Michael Luchies
"Everything" does not qualify as a thoughtful comment on what the Detroit Lions needs are for the 2010 NFL season. Matthew Stafford had a very productive rookie season if you take in consideration the blocking he received and how inconsistent the play was at wide receiver outside of Calvin Johnson. The offense was at times fun to watch with Stafford, which is scary to think what they might look like with another deep threat, Pettigrew healthy at tight end, an upgraded O-line, and a top 10 running back. That's a lot to ask for, and we haven't mentioned the defense yet.

The addition of Burleson will add a threat at wide receiver, but if he can be a solid #2 wide out remains to be seen. The upgrades on the defensive line have been brilliant, and Houston and Wade at cornerback is a good start at compiling a solid group of defensive backs. Even after free agency, several needs remain.

Offensive Needs
An offensive guard should be the top priority for the offense, if not overall. Stafford is a pricey investment that looks like it might have been worth it, but not if he gets sacked 5 times a game. A guard and some depth at tackle would add stability to the Lions line and give Stafford a little more comfort in the pocket. After addressing the line, the Lions can start to look for weapons to compliment Staffords arm and Calvin Johnson's freakish ability. A powerful back and a third threat at receiver would do wonders.

Defensive Needs
Most analysts would jump to say that the Lions top priority is a secondary because of their awful pass defense and inability to cover wide receivers. Addressing the line will in turn help the secondary by putting pressure on the opposing quarterback. Quarterbacks have been picking apart the secondary because they have all day to throw. Taking Suh, or McCoy with the second pick would be a great start for the Lions defense. Louis Delmas had a tremendous impact for the Lions, but they do need more help in the secondary, especially at cornerback. The line is looking much better, but one more defensive tackle is still a priority.

A Dream Draft for the Lions
A dream draft for the Detroit Lions would start with Suh dropping to the second pick, which would only happen if the Rams decide they have no option but to select a quarterback. Grabbing McCoy out of Oklahoma would not be a bad runner-up prize in the Suh lottery. After the first round the Lions need to address the offensive line. After the line is addressed I would not be surprised to see the Lions pursue a skill position, such as wide receiver or running back. The Lions will pursue Blount out of Oregon towards the end of the draft regardless of his issues. If Suh or McCoy isn't the pick, then Okung from Oklahoma State will make a great guard for the Lions. The Lions may not be done in free agency, but I wouldn't expect any headline signings.
