Gator Linebacker Stock Has Fallen Could Be a Great Third Roud Steal
Brandon Spikes' Strengths
1) Steve Lansdale from The RanchReport.com (via Scout .com) describes Spikes as "a powerful, explosive load who can plug the middle of a defense, fighting off blockers and blasting ball carriers.
2) Spike's speed might not be fast. However, he is quick. According to Lansdale, "he can shoot a gap in a heartbeat and blow up a ball carrier."
3) He was a leader on a very talented college defense. Spikes was on a team that won two National Championships and a Sugar Bowl during his four seasons.
Brandon Spikes' Weaknesses
1) Lansdale reports, "at Florida's Pro Day Wednesday in Gainesville, LB Brandon Spikes ran a pair of 40-yard dashes, finishing each between 5.0 and 5.1 seconds." The 40 times were real slow for a linebacker, and his stock took a serious slide.
2) After a huge sophomore season Mike Burke reported in the Bleacher Report, "his numbers declined from there." The NFL Draft Bible states, "Spikes had his worst season in 2009."
3) Character questions? "A suspension for an eye-gouging incident against Georgia."
Brandon Spikes will be drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the third round
Baltimore, Denver, and Arizona all need inside linebackers and surely would pick Brandon Spikes if he is available in the third round. However, I think the Jaguars would select him in the third round if he is available. Spikes was once considered first round talent, but the slow 40 and the eye gouging incident don't help. However, Brandon would have tremendous value as a third round pick. The Jags would love to have another potential starter from the draft. The former Gator is local and could attract some fans to see the Jacksonville club.
