2010 NFL Draft Preview: Derrick Morgan

JM Van Horn
Every NFL team wants to find the next greatest pass rush specialist to terrorize quarterbacks every Sunday. The one player with the most potential to fill this spot in the 2010 NFL draft is Georgia Tech's Derrick Morgan.

Derrick Morgan's Strengths

The first thing you notice about Morgan is the explosiveness he has coming off the ball. This quickness helped Morgan rack up over 18 sacks during his last two years in college.

Another definite strength for Morgan that can not be ignored is his ability to rush the passer from the down or up position. This versatility will be what helps him learn the finer points of playing defensive line in the NFL.

Morgan shows better than average football instincts when it comes to pursuing the ball and running down players from behind, two solid attributes for success in the NFL.

Derrick Morgan's Weaknesses

While Morgan has natural talent, he has shown the inability to control his raw ability at times. Any team that selects Morgan will realize that they will not see his full potential until he plays in the NFL for a few years.

Derrick Morgan will be draft by the New York Giants

The Giants' defense took a step back in 2009, especially when it came to their once dominant pass rush. There top three sack specialists saw a drop in their production, which even resulted in Osi Umenyiora being dropped in the depth chart.

What makes Morgan an intriguing selection for the Giants is that he would give them the option of playing as a defensive end or even as an outside linebacker.

The addition of Morgan to the front line would give the Giants a spark and bring their pass rush back to the tops in the NFL.

While Derrick Morgan has a lot to prove for which ever teams selects him in the 2010 NFL Draft, it does appear that he will not be a welcomed sight by the opposing quarterbacks for years to come.

I know, I think Morgan is going to be a perfect fit for the Titans. I am surprised the Giants passed on him for a draft bust.

I love the fact that my beloved TN Titans wound up drafting him!
