2010 NFL Draft Preview: Eric Berry

JM Van Horn
When the 2010 NFL draft takes place in April, there are only a few players who have a legitimate shot at being the overall number one selection. One of them is safety Eric Berry from Tennessee, who some say is the second coming of Baltimore Ravens' Ed Reed.

Eric Berry's Strengths

During his college career, Berry excelled in pass defense and showed a knack for getting to the ball and causing the turnover. He recorded 14 interceptions while recovering three fumbles.

Berry's speed and natural football instincts have helped developed him for success at the next level. Berry has shown he can read the quarterback and put himself in the right position to make the play.

When Berry did make a mistake, his speed allowed him to compensate and make the right adjustments.

In college, Berry showed he was able to make an impact on the run defense and showed improvement over the season with his tackling ability.

Eric Berry's Weaknesses

The biggest concern about Berry going into the 2010 NFL draft is his size. He is only 5'11" tall and weighs in at 203 pounds. The lack of size may pose a problem when covering some of the larger receivers in the NFL or while trying to take down the power running backs.

Berry will need to work on adding another 10 pounds of muscle during the off-season. If he does, he should see an overall improvement against the pass and run.

Eric Berry Will Be Drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs

In 2009, the Chiefs had one of the worst defenses in the league, giving up 388.2 yards per game while letting the opposition score on average 26.5 points per game.

The addition of Eric Berry to the Chiefs lineup will help solidify a defense and keep them in close games. He should be able to learn the system and make a few big plays during his rookie season.
