2010 North Carolina Sales Tax Free Weekend is August 6-8

5 Non-School Items You Can Buy During NC's Sales Tax Free Weekend

Carly Hart
The month of August means back to school sales and sales tax free weekends in several states, including North Carolina. During the weekend of August 6-8, North Carolina will waive its sales tax collection on back to school items such as clothing, footwear, computers and more. Even if you don't have a child in school, there are still several items that you can purchase tax free that you may not have considered.

Life Jackets - Life preservers are tax free during North Carolina's sales tax free weekend. If you are a boater and in need of life jackets, save a few dollars on their purchase. So long as the cost of the life preserver is less than $50, it qualifies. Also qualifying: Waders. Fishermen can snag a bit of a bargain by buying their waders between August 6 and 8.

Ski Boots - Though off-season, ski boots costing less than $50 are also sales tax free during the tax free weekend. Plan ahead for winter ski season by snagging your ski boots well in advance of the ski season.

Bike Helmets - Upgrade or replace your bike helmet during tax free weekend. Helmets costing $50 or less are included in tax free savings. Parents with children may want to buy a new one too since kids are always growing. While you might notice last year's jeans are now more like capri pants, you may not think to check to see if they've outgrown their bicycle helmet too.

Copy Paper - Copy paper can be purchased sales tax free in North Carolina during the tax free weekend if it costs less than $100. Do some comparison shopping and decide whether buying a case for use during the year is worth the investment. Find someone to go halvsies if a case is too much for your needs.

Costumes - After school starts, Halloween is just around the corner. If your local store has its Halloween costumes out, take a moment to browse through the selection. Costumes can be purchased sales tax free during the tax free weekend so long as they cost under $100. Masks, on the other hand, are still taxed.
