2010 Oklahoma Sooners Football Schedule

David Funk
As some of you that have read my articles on here or elsewhere, you know that I'm a big fan of the Oklahoma Sooners especially their football team. I lived in Midwest City as a kid in the 1980s, and have pulled for them ever since. As the college football season is here, I'm going to look at their schedule for the 2010 season.

Saturday, September 4: Utah State
All-Time Series: Oklahoma leads 4-0
Notes: Oklahoma is 10-1 in season openers since Bob Stoops took over as head coach in 1999.

Once again, the Sooners open the season at home. With the Sooners dominance at home against an over-matched opponent, this should be an easy opening game victory for them. Oh yeah, I'll be in attendance at this game.

Result: Sooners 31, Utah State 24
DeMarco Murray had a career-high 218 rushing yards as Oklahoma struggled to get past Utah State. Utah State had 421 yards of offense and four turnovers against the Sooners in a much closer than expected game in Norman.

Saturday, September 11: Florida State
All-Time Series: Oklahoma leads 4-1
Notes: Four of the five meetings between the two teams have taken place in bowl games. The game between the two is the first to be played in Norman since 1976. This will be only the second time they've met without Bobby Bowden coaching on the sidelines for the Seminoles. They won that game without Bowden in the 1964 Sugar Bowl.

A new era without Bobby Bowden has begun as the Seminoles play in Norman and will be at home against Oklahoma the following year. This is the first test for the Sooners, and will be a much closer game than in their opener.

Result: Sooners 47, Florida State 17
Landry Jones rebounded from a subpar opening game by throwing for 380 yards and four touchdowns as the Sooners blowout Florida State at home. The defense held FSU quarterback Christian Ponder to 11-for-28 and only 113 passing yards after they struggled in the season opener.

Saturday, September 18: Air Force
All-Time Series: Oklahoma leads 1-0
Notes: The only meeting between the two took place in 2001 in Colorado Springs which makes this the first time they've played in Norman. The game also takes place near Tinker Air Force in Midwest City.

Air Force has been a consistent bowl game participant for several years, and might be able to stay in the game for little bit. Oklahoma probably has too much firepower on both sides of the ball as well as that dominant homefield advantage though.

Saturday, September 25: at Cincinnati
All-Time Series: Oklahoma leads 1-0
Notes: This is the first ever meeting between the two in Cincinnati. The Bearcats have a new coach and are attempting to build on their Big East Conference winning season of 2009 with a win against a prestigious Oklahoma program.

Saturday, October 2: Texas at Dallas
All-Time Series: Texas leads 59-40-5
Notes: Bob Stoops is 6-5 against Texas, but has lost four of the last five. Mack Brown is 6-6 lifetime against Oklahoma. The two haven't played each other outside of Dallas since 1923 when the game took place in Austin, TX.

Aw, the Red River Rivalry. If everything falls into place with both teams coming into this game undefeated, it could be a No. 1 vs No. 2 match-up. Early national title implications are likely in this game which isn't the first time that has happened in one of sports' greatest rivalries.

Saturday, October 9: Bye

Saturday, October 16: Iowa State
All-Time Series: Oklahoma leads 67-5-2
Notes: Iowa State won the first ever meeting in 1928, and has won only four times against Oklahoma since. Oklahoma has only lost once in the last 40 games against Iowa State.

Iowa State shocked some experts by making a bowl game in Paul Rhoades first year as coach. But making it back will be a serious challenge. The Cyclones have their annual game against Iowa, Utah at home, and Northern Illinois out of conference. This game against Oklahoma begins a stretch where they play in Norman, at Texas, Kansas at home, and Nebraska at home. Yikes.

Saturday, October 23: at Missouri
All-Time Series: Oklahoma leads 66-23-5
Notes: Missouri won the first meeting in 1996 when the Big 12 Conference opened for play. Oklahoma has won seven straight against Missouri since that time including two wins in the Big 12 Championship Game.

Mizzou head coach Gary Pinkel is looking for his first win against Oklahoma in Columbia. Oklahoma has scored exactly twice as many points against Pinkel's Tigers(232-116).

Saturday, October 30: Colorado
All-Time Series: Oklahoma leads 39-17-2
Notes: Colorado won eight of nine games against Oklahoma including five in a row at Norman before 1999. Since Bob Stoops took over as Oklahoma head coach, the Buffaloes haven't won in Norman and are 2-5 against them.

The last time these two played, the Buffaloes pulled off a last second win with a late field goal in a 27-24 win at Boulder in 2007. Colorado has only scored 14 points in Norman against Stoops, and will have to get their offense going to have any chance of another upset here.

Saturday, November 6: at Texas A&M
All-Time Series: Oklahoma leads 18-10
Notes: Oklahoma is 4-1 against the Aggies at College Station in the Stoops era. Four of the five meetings between the two in College Station have been decided by a touchdown or less.

Outside of the blowout win by Oklahoma in 2008, it hasn't been easy to win in College Station. Many remember the remarkable second half comeback wins for the Sooners in 2000 and in 2004 in which they later made the national title game. The Aggies upset the Sooners in 2002. Oklahoma also escaped with a one point win in 2006, and this could be another tough one in College Station.

Saturday, November 13: Texas Tech
All-Time Series: Oklahoma leads 12-5
Notes: The two teams didn't first play against each other until 1992, and have played every year since which does include a bowl game. Texas Tech has won only once in Norman in 1996. Oklahoma had their largest margin of victory against Texas Tech in their last meeting in 2008 winning 65-21.

Both teams have won their home games against the other every year since 2003 when the Sooners won in Lubbock. The Red Raiders have given up 60 points or more twice in Norman in the Stoops era, and defense will be the focus of the Texas Tech program under new head coach Tommy Tuberville.

Saturday, November 20: at Baylor
All-Time Series: Oklahoma leads 19-0
Notes: Not only has Baylor never beaten Oklahoma, they've only come within a touchdown or less three times while losing one of them in overtime in 2005. Oklahoma has scored at least 33 points against Baylor in every game in the Stoops era.

This is the last game of the regular season for Baylor, and will be attempting to make a bowl game for the first time since 1994. And, it could come down to them having to beat Oklahoma for the first time ever to become bowl eligible.

Saturday, November 27: at Oklahoma State
All-Time Series: Oklahoma leads 81-16-7
Notes: Oklahoma has won seven straight against the Cowboys after losing two in a row in 2001-02. Besides the win at Stillwater in 2002, three of the other four games there have been decided by six points or less.

Last year in a down season as well as typical role reversal for the Sooners, the Cowboys were knocked out of a potential BCS game as Oklahoma won 27-0. The Bedlam Series to the end the season is only fitting once again.

Saturday, December 4: Big 12 Championship at Cowboys Stadiumin Arlington, TX
Big 12 North winner vs Big 12 South winner

Oklahoma has won the Big 12 Championship Game six times with one loss. The Red River Rivalry could once again decide who represents the South division in this game. The North hasn't won this game since 2003 when Kansas State upset Oklahoma.

As the season progresses, I'll update the results of each game played by Oklahoma. Boomer Sooner!
