2010 Oscar Hair Trends

Side Swept and Chignon Styles from the Red Carpet to the Streets

Each year people watch the Oscar's to see the high fashions, ostentatious jewelry and the hair styles. The gowns, hair, shoes, and suit styles presented on the red carpet will become inspirations for formal events and everyday street attire. Zoe Saldana's hair and dress ensemble was a great combination while Charlize Theron missed the mark with her Christian Dior dress. The gown was a light pink-lavender color which had two rosettes on her bust drawing attention away from her face. Although these celebrity dresses were completely different Herbal Essence's celebrity hairstylist Charles Baker Strahan points out these ladies shared a common thread; their hair style.

The Oscar's which is known for its posh glamor gave way to two main hair trends on the red carpet; the chignon and the side-swept cascade of hair. Zoe Saldana and Rachel McAdams both rocked the red carpet with this very simple but elegant chignon up do. This style was lifted, creating a very small pompadour look from the front with a tight knot at the back of the head. The second version worn by Charlize Theron and Demi Moore was a much looser version with soft cascading waves of hair along the side of the face and with a knot that was lower and looser in the back. The third version of this up do was a sleek tight chignon at the nape of the neck.

The chignon is lovely but some of the celebrities decided to wear their hair down in one of the hottest styles from the 2010 Fall fashion runways. This trend of over the shoulder-side swept hair was sported by Sandra Bullock on the red carpet. Her hair was worn parted with an extreme razor sharp side split and tucked behind her ears. Not only did she wear the side part but her long hair was stylishly laying over one shoulder with the rest laying on her back. Sandra's approach to this style was very smooth and sleek while Cameron Diaz took the same style in a much looser, softer look with wispy pieces laying over one of her shoulders.

Now that these styles have been seen as two of the major trends on the red carpet and on the fashion runways there is a likelihood we will be seeing more of it on the street. These up do's were perfect for this very formal event but can be street chic for every day events and functions. Chignons and side-swept styles are classy and can dress up any outfit with a quick twist of the hair. A white blouse and slacks can look very polished with this combination of clothing and hairstyle.

On the other hand; summer dresses and sandals can be accompanied by loose side-swept hair or a softer chignon to create a great balance between the casual and sexy. If the event is formal, such as a wedding or prom, any version of these styles will compliment your formal gown. Since chignon, soft chignons and the side-part over the shoulder styles can be worn among the more seasoned celebrity, as well as, the younger Hollywood actresses there is no worry about these styles being age appropriate.

I thought what was better than all of these hairstyles was the gardenia in Mo'Nique's hair in remembrance of Hattie McDaniel.

I thought it was interesting to see so many stars wear their hair down this year.
