2010 Oscars Best and Worst Dressed Include Familiar Names

Which Celebrities Nailed It -- and Who Failed It -- on the Red Carpet at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards

Los Angeles -- The red carpet at the Academy Awards is the Super Bowl of fashion. No other event puts as much pressure on the celebrity community (and their stylists) to bring their A-game when it comes to gowns, makeup, hairstyles and accessories. The 2010 awards -- whether for the Oscars' best dressed or worst dressed -- was no exception, showcasing formal attire of all shapes and sizes on the red carpet. Some of the biggest trends this year were jewel-tones, one-shouldered dresses, strapless bodices and metallic hues.

However, it takes a dress that doesn't just follow the trends, but rather defines them, to land a spot on the best-dressed list.

Many gowns on the red carpet of the 82nd annual Academy Awards were memorable standouts that will be duplicated by every cheap designer just in time for prom season. Others, sadly, missed the fashion mark, and the only place you'll be seeing them is on the Oscars "Worst Dressed" page of every celebrity gossip magazine.

2010 Oscar Best Dressed

Cameron Diaz: Cameron Diaz made a late entrance on her way down the red carpet, saving one of the best dresses for last. She epitomized classic Hollywood glamour in her champagne-colored Oscar de la Renta gown, covered in golden beading. Not only was her dress perfection, she also got it right on the hair, makeup, and accessory front, creating a cohesive (and simple) look that not only showcased her beauty, but also made her a red-carpet standout.

Jennifer Lopez: Jennifer Lopez has become a recognizable fashion icon throughout her career, taking risks and defining what it means to be a diva (for the most part). This year for the Academy Awards, Lopez proved to Hollywood she's still got it, wearing a soft lilac Armani Prive gown that can only be described as pure elegance. The originality of this dress lies in the details of the fabric that folds over the bodice and the train that blooms and cascades from her hip. An added bonus, on Lopez, was that this gown went from sophisticated to sexy. What captive audience doesn't appreciate a little sex appeal?

Elizabeth Banks: Elizabeth Banks stunned in a strapless Versace number in an unusual smoky gray color that we don't usually see on the red carpet. However, Banks not only pulled it off, but she was able to create a memorable look that's flawless enough to land her on the Oscar best-dressed list. Everything from the fitted bodice to the flowing details on the skirt contributed to a confection-like dress. The smoky tone of the dress looked incredible on her pale skin, and almost perfectly matches the color of her eyes. Thankfully, she kept her makeup simple and her hair swept up, accessorized by only a simple headband.

2010 Oscar Worst Dressed

Zoe Saldana: Although Zoe Saldana is undeniably beautiful, her choice of red carpet attire was not. The top and bottom of her Givenchy Haute Couture purple gown seemed as if they were trying to achieve two completely different looks. How does a dress that begins in bling at the top end with what looks like ballooning sea urchin replicas at the bottom? Additionally, the entire dress looked stiff and did not have the natural, graceful flow you'd find on a gown made of a lighter material. The worst part about the whole situation is that Saldana could have stopped traffic in a simple, less embellished dress. Instead, she ended up wearing the most confused looking garment I've seen on the red carpet in all of 2010.

Diane Kruger: Diane Kruger is another example of a stunning woman in an unflattering dress. The Chanel gown she chose did absolutely nothing flattering for her figure. Instead, it cut her silhouette into three horizontal parts. The pleated top and bottom of the gown was acceptable, but the middle section was decorated with gathered details that ruined the entire look. It only detracted from what could have been a beautiful, simple gown.

Charlize Theron: Charlize Theron, although usually a red carpet-winner, disappointed this time around in her Dior gown. Although the color was a unique combination of dusty rose and light pink, its downfall was the two, large spiral designs conveniently placed upon her breasts -- obviously, distracting and bringing the focus away from her face. The dress isn't terrible; it just isn't right for the red carpet -- and Charlize Theron, for that matter.
