2010 Oscars: Worst Dressed Actresses

The annual Oscar ceremony is highly anticipated for its fashion winners and losers as well as the presentation of the coveted Academy Awards. The 2010 Academy Awards featured one of the most interesting red carpets in years. There were some fashion standouts, but this year's ceremony displayed quite a few fashion faux pas. Here's a rundown of the top five worst dressed actresses at the 2010 Oscars.

2010 Oscars Worst Dressed: Sarah Jessica Parker

Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker is known for her chic style; however, she really dropped the ball at the 2010 Oscars. Parker usually shows a softer side, often wearing romantic, vintage-style dresses, but this year she seemed to be going for a retro Valley of the Dolls vibe. Her makeup and hair seemed harsh, the poor fit of her Chanel dress was not at all flattering and the ugly yellowish color washed her out. SJP has become a fashion icon as Carrie Bradshaw on Sex and the City, but at the Oscars she seemed almost unrecognizable, so this landed her a spot on the 2010 Oscars Worst Dressed list.

2010 Oscars Worst Dressed: Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez's Oscar gown was an example of a disturbing 2010 Oscar trend: dresses with a mind of their own. Some stars wore Academy Award gowns that featured strange embellishments and elements like unusual ruffles that threatened to overpower the wearer. J Lo's dress, designed by Armani Prive, had a weird ruffle that appeared to be growing out of her hip, not the best choice for a curvier figure.

Also, the neutral pale color of this gown wasn't the most flattering hue on Lopez. Worst of all, actress Amanda Seyfried wore a very similar dress, by the same designer on the same Oscar red carpet (what a true Academy Award faux pas!) Fashion blunders like these helped Jennifer Lopez secure her spot on the 2010 Oscars Worst Dressed list; better luck next year for J Lo.

2010 Oscars Worst Dressed: Vera Farmiga

Vera Farmiga, nominated for her role in Up in the Air, suffered the same fate as actress Jennifer Lopez. Farmiga had the misfortune of wearing a bright pink Marchesa gown that completely swallowed her up in ruffles, causing many to wonder: is she wearing the dress or is the dress wearing her? Vera Farmiga is a rising star in Hollywood, but this unfortunate fashion choice earned her a place on this year's list of 2010 Oscars Worst Dressed actresses.

Compounding the fashion felony: Vera Farmiga didn't always stand up straight and she didn't smile a lot either (but in a dress like that, there isn't a lot to smile about). Many of the other more low key stars can take a lesson from actresses like the beaming Helen Mirren: you're never fully dressed on the Oscar red carpet without regal posture and a gracious smile. Here's hoping that glowering Kristen Stewart (from the Twilight series) will loosen up a bit and learn to smile more at the Academy Awards, and Miley Cyrus will learn to put her shoulders back while wearing a strapless gown!

2010 Oscars Worst Dressed: Charlize Theron

Was Charlize Theron trying to steal attention from the female Oscar nominees at the 2010 Academy Awards, or was she just being terribly fashion forward in her choice of Dior gown? Theron had to know that the style of her Oscar gown would have Hollywood buzzing, and propel her to the top of the 2010 Oscars Worst Dressed Actresses list. Theron was one of many actresses this year that looked nice from the neck up, but wore a gown with fashion gaffes.

Her dress, designed by Galliano for Dior, had two circular pale pink donut shaped attachments placed right over each breast! This caused all eyes to gravitate toward Theron's chest, not her beautiful face. Her fashion catastrophe really had everyone talking, so even though Charlize Theron was not nominated this year, she still grabbed lots of attention at the 2010 Academy Awards ceremony.

2010 Oscars Worst Dressed: Zoe Saldana

Zoe Saldana has the distinction of starring in the blockbuster film Avatar and her 2010 Academy Award outfit was out of this world (but not in a good way). This year, she also earns the distinction of landing on the 2010 Oscars Worst Dressed list. Everything was fine with Saldana's Oscar look, until her gown was viewed from the waist down. This monstrosity of a gown, designed by Givenchy, featured a slit up the front and tons of garish tie dyed purple embellishments (Zoe, what were you thinking? Fire your stylist!)

What was up this year with all the strange protrusions attached to various Oscar gowns and the uneven hems of the dresses? You could almost hear the collective gasps as Saldana and Carey Mulligan (in Prada) showed more leg than possibly was intended, as they lifted up their dresses in order to descend the stairs onstage at the Oscar ceremony. As for Carey Mulligan (nominated for An Education), many loved or hated her black dress, but most seemed to commend her for taking a risk and choosing Prada.

2010 Oscars Best Dressed Actresses

Fortunately, there were a few fashion winners that stood out from the crowd at the 2010 Academy Awards. Best Actress winner Sandra Bullock chose the perfect gown to complement her Oscar win. Bullock's silver Marchesa gown, sleek hair and simple makeup with stunning red lipstick made her one of the highlights of the red carpet. Monique and Gabourey Sidibe both looked elegant in their blue Oscar gowns, and Dame Helen Mirren shone in her Badgley Mischka dress. Young Anna Kendrick was a delight in a blush colored dress that perfectly enhanced her pale complexion. Meryl Streep, the world's most respected movie actress, was elegant and classy in a simple white gown designed by former Project Runway contestant Chris March.

On the 2010 Academy Award red carpet, the over-40 actresses like Bullock, Streep and Mirren put most of the hot young movie stars to shame. There were a lot more misses than hits at the 2010 Oscars, but the stars get another chance to get it right at next year's Academy Awards. Don't forget to tune in to the Oscars telecast in 2011 to check out all of next year's Academy Award winner and losers.

Jennifer Lopez' dress kinda looked like spray-starched Kleenex. but she's still gorgeous.

I totally agree with your review in every respect. There were some shockers. It proves that "simple is best". I also thought Kate Winslett looked really nice.
