2010 People's Choice Award: Favorite Talk Show Host
Ellen Degeneres
Ellen led things off tonight by accepting the award (for the 11th time) without the other nominees even being read. I'm pretty sure Oprah was a no-show anyway. Ellen's remarks, "Oprah, I'm sorry your show got canceled this year..."
2010 People's Choice Award: Favorite Comedy Movie
"The Proposal"
Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock accepted the award. I was surprised at first by the win, I thought sure it would go to "The Hangover". I think the voters were definitely a younger crowd. Sandra Bullock is having a great year. Ryan Reynolds can have any award he wants as far as I'm concerned. I've been a fan of his since "Two Guys a Girl and a Pizza Place".
2010 People's Choice Award: Favorite R&B Artist
Mariah Carey
Well, this was the closest to a live TV scare for the night. Mariah Carey was there to accept the award, with assistance from husband Nick Cannon. Mariah appeared to be feeling absolutely no pain. I did not know there was tail-gating at the PCA's.
2010 People's Choice Award: Favorite TV Comedy Actor
Steve Carell
Steve Carell is just a funny guy. Starting out with the audience repeating his "The Office" character's favorite line: "That's what she said!", he proceeded to run off a string of one-liners with audience participation. Like: This is much bigger than I thought it was going to be (That's what she said); I'm going to take this home and put it in a special place (that's what she said).
2010 People's Choice Award: Favorite TV Comedy Actress
Alyson Hannigan
From "How I Met Your Mother", Alyson Hannigan stole the award from comedy favorite Tina Fey. I think this proves again the age of the voters for this particular award show. Fey was the only real competition in this category.
We also got a glimpse of Season 20 of "Survivor". This one is another all star's game titled "Survivor: Heroes Vs. Villains, Redemption". I am looking forward to this one with the return of 'Evil Russell' and Ruppert (the friendly pirate).
2010 People's Choice Award: Favorite TV Comedy
"The Big Bang Theory"
With Steve Carell winning over Jim Parsons I thought sure "The Office" would take this category. This is the nerds' revenge. The cast of "The Big Bang Theory" work well together and the show is very funny. I had it easily narrowed down to one of these two shows. The entire cast and crew took the stage to accept the award. I like that, it shows that it means something to them.
2010 People's Choice Award: Favorite Country Artist
Carrie Underwood
This was a mild shocker for me. I thought sure rising star Taylor Swift would take all the female country awards tonight. In fact, I figured Taylor would win all the female awards in general, just seems to be going that way for her. Carrie Underwood showed that she is still on the top of the female country charts for a reason. Carrie Underwood has not outgrown her young listeners yet. With all of her successes she seems to have been around forever.
2010 People's Choice Award: Favorite TV Drama Actor & Favorite TV Drama
Hugh Laurie ~ "House"
Give this man anything he wants, I say. I always enjoy Hugh Laurie's acceptance speeches (though it still freaks me out to hear the accent). Tonight was no exception. Hugh Laurie began serious, by dedicating his award to the cast and crew of "House". He then dedicated the show's award to himself because "...without me, they are nothing, and it's an honor to work with me." I continue my secret crush on this actor.
2010 People's Choice Award: Favorite Movie Actress
Sandra Bullock
I told you she was having a great year. With George Lopez presenting the award, I was pretty sure Bullock was the winner. Lopez made the joke about presenting the award to the five white women Tiger Wood's has not slept with. Sandra Bullock corrected Lopez, "...there are only four of us who didn't sleep with Tiger..". She then teared up as she thanked her fans and family.
2010 People's Choice Award: Favorite Independent Film
Inglorious Basturds
2010 People's Choice Award: Favorite Break Out Actor
Taylor Lautner
No way... a cute actor from "Twilight" would win a fan voted award. The young Lautner seemed genuinely appreciative of the award and fan support.
2010 People's Choice Award: Favorite Action Star
Hugh Jackman
With Gerard Butler getting most of the limelight last year, I was happy with Hugh Jackman's win tonight for "Wolverine". Hugh Jackman has shown over and over what a nice guy looks like. Thanking all the fans and his family, and looking hotter than a guy should really be allowed. Jackman said, "...there's only one thing left to do here, run for governor." I'd move to Cali to vote for you.
2010 People's Choice Award: Favorite Male Artist
Keith Urban
It was the night for nice guys, finally. Keith Urban, sitting in the front row, thanked fans and said he'd had a great time out on the road. That's saying a lot, road life is hard. Keith Urban delivers a fun country concert that actually reminds me of real country music. This is a weird category, putting the likes of Eminem and Urban together.
2010 People's Choice Award: Fave Web Celeb
Ashton Kutcher
Pretty much an easy call here. Ashton Kutcher put out the challenge to beat CNN to a million followers on Twitter. He made it, and raised money while doing so. Kutcher raised money during his tweet-a-thon for mosquito netting for malaria ridden countries, and he succeeded there too. Distributing the netting to 3rd world countries in need.
2010 People's Choice Award: Favorite Female Artist
Taylor Swift
There is the new princess of country, holding out for the bigger award of overall favorite. Taylor Swift was ever thankful for the award. I'm sure this is going to be a great decade for young Taylor. Get ready.
2010 People's Choice Award: Favorite Movie Actor & Actor of the Decade
Johnny Depp
This one really took me by surprise. I don't know if I was more shocked that Depp has received more votes than any other actor (ever), or by the fact that the reclusive actor was actually there to accept the award. Coming from backstage, kept out of the audience, Depp accepted the adulation like he was being publicly admonished. He's just one of those guys that's not into crowds, it seems. I don't think he understands his popularity. In torn blue jeans and a tux jacket, hair greasy and stringy, and constantly touching his spotty mustache... and they still love him. Actually adore him.
There were two other awards given:
Fave New TV Drama - "Vampire Diaries"
Fave New TV Comedy - "Glee"
I knew the FOX hit "Glee" would win something from this fan based award show, but favorite new comedy... that doesn't quite fit. There is just nowhere to put the "High School Musical"-like show. Parts of it are funny. I do enjoy the show.
That wraps up the first official award show of 2010. There were no train wrecks (sans Mariah Carey's close call). Next up are the Golden Globe Awards, I'll see you here.
