2010 Similac Recall: 5M Units of Baby Formula Recalled for Bugs!

Jennifer Waite
With millions of parents likely searching for Similac recall information, Similac.com is being bombarded with tons of extra traffic making it virtually impossible to get the page to load. This huge surge in site traffic is due to the creepy Similac recall, announced just in time to scare parents silly before Halloween even starts: bug parts in the baby formula!

Up to five million containers of Similac baby formula have been recalled in the U.S. and outlying areas. For more information on affected lines, batches and lots, call the number for Similac and Abbot Laboratories at the bottom of this article. (But don't skip the middle. That's totally cheating and we'll find out. We always find out.)

2010 Similac Recall Info Here

The new 2010 Similac recall was initiated voluntarily by Abbott Laboratories Wednesday due to possible contamination by beetles, bits of beetles or beetle larvae. The U.S. is affected, as is Puerto Rico and Guam. Some now-recalled product may have been distributed even further.

Of course, out of a perfectly reasonable abundance of caution, the five million units of Similac baby formula are being recalled and destroyed. Sales of possibly contaminated product have halted. However, the FDA agrees that besides being gross, for the most part, beetles pose little to no threat to humans even when ingested.

Remember, Moms: Only in the rarest of circumstances has a woman's breastmilk ever been recalled for beetle contamination. When medically possible and practical, the new 2010 Similac recall proves yet again that breast is best! When breastfeeding isn't an option, you can still trust Similac. However, might we suggest a small kitchen strainer to tackle those pesky legs, wings and antenna?

The Great 2010 Similac Recall: Designer Baby Formula, Now With More Protein!

Rather than freak everyone about about yet another recall, why don't we just go with this one and maybe turn a buck? We could sell it as "Bits O' Beetles: Now With More Natural Bug Protein!"....stock it in hippy-dippy shops in Northern California or Portland for $25 a container, and watch the cash roll in as all the 'cool' parents begin feeding their child over-priced insects for lunch.

The great Similac recall of 2010 could help save the American economy on the backs of a few thousand easily-led rich people. Five million units of insect-laden formula? We can't just let that go to waste.

Hey, I have an even better idea. Let's quietly pass the recalled Similac formula on to waitresses and servers throughout the country, and make it a federal law that it can be used in place of requested dairy items for any customer who is either a dick, or presents the smallest threat of becoming a dick. Either way, they get "beetle-juiced".

(I'm just saying. Lemons out of lemonade, you know? Hey, why does the lemonade smell funny? Now that's just going too far...)

To contact Abbott Laboratories and Similac with any recalled baby formula concerns you may have, call (800) 986-8850. You can also visit similac.com once site traffic subsides a bit.

Yuck! Another reason why breast is best!

This one had me rolling on the floor. Having eaten termites and caterpillars in the Congo -- I can appreciate the protein reference. Nevertheless, I wouldn't want a newborn with an undeveloped immune system eating one until they were at the age where they could crawl fast enough to catch one and eat the bug themselves - like the earwig my sister caught and ate when she was seven months old. No one gets mad when people say that parents should use car seats. Having worked in over 33 developing countries, they wouldn't want the formula because the death rates there are astronomically increased with use of formula. They would however appreciated donated milk or wet nurses. The simple solution to lack of immediate availability and accessibility of mother's milk is to use sterile formula until such time that systems are set up for wet nursing, milk sharing and more readily available donor milk.

So much formula is going to be completely wasted because of something that isn't even going to hurt us. I'll bet there are some orphanages and hospitals in some poor countries who would be more than willing to have our formula with beetle parts. We're so picky.

    I hate to hear that.

The real "Mama Grizzlies" don't have much of a sense of humor these days I guess. Personally, I think it's refreshing to read a recall article with some humor in it. Hey, if my Twinkies were recalled for beetle infestations, would anyone care?

I knew it wouldn't take long for the pro breastfeeders to jump on this! Very predictable! I agree with C Jacobs. What about those that wanted to breastfeed and it didn't work out? If we were bad moms we wouldn't feel guilty! We should all support each other! You will have your share failures too! Direct your energies to something that REALLY matters in this world! Note...all the time you spend judging others takes time from your little one....that makes you a bad Mom!

  • C Jacobs9/24/2010

I just want to say that there are more than enough reasons for moms to suffer from mommy guilt without getting it from other people, i.e. other moms. Shouldn't we try to be supportive whether someone decides to breastfeed or bottle feed? It is a personal decision that no one has the right to make for you. And, for the love of all that is good and holy, WE ALL KNOW THAT BREAST IS BEST. Now quit harping on it. And Ms. Elizabeth, you get off your high horse and quit judging everyone else for making a personal decision that YOU do not have the right to make for them. You have no right to tell me that I don't care about my child because she has formula, you know nothing about me or my situation. Do I judge you because you nurse your child until he/she is 4? No, I do not, so please leave me, mine, and everyone else's alone.

  • grow up... great examples!9/23/2010

I breast fed, and still do... but I am supplementing with similac. So why exactly are these breast feeding bitches, like Elizabeth, even on here? why would you need to be on a formula website when you don't use it/need it? come on... grow up!
