2010 Unemployment Extension: Applying for Jobless Checks Online for Those in Indiana

Hoosiers Can Start Applying for Benefits in August

Meg G.
The 2010 unemployment extension passed, and now it's a matter of getting the benefits into the hands (and bank accounts) of people across the nation. For some, the wait could be quite treacherous. Nevada has already announced their nightmare, which includes waiting for a letter from the state and then responding to said letter.

For those in Michigan, the state has pledged to have checks flowing within a matter of weeks. After reading those reports people in Indiana may be wondering...when can I get my unemployment extension?

In the Hoosier state,it's been announced that individuals will be able to begin filing for benefits online early next month. This is a very convenient method to file for checks, as there's no need to use gas money to go to an overcrowded office, wait all day, and run the risk of getting nothing done.

The exception to being able to apply for benefits online is, of course, those entering the final tier of benefits (tier 4). According to Inside Indiana, "It is a requirement of the Extended Benefits program that each person applies in person at their local WorkOne Center and brings their eligibility letter from DWD. The department will resume sending those letters this week. Hoosiers previously enrolled in Extended Benefits will have vouchers available beginning August 3 to collect the benefits they had remaining when the program ended on June 2."

Even though it is likely going to be a headache to get the benefits going again, it's worth it to the millions of individuals who cannot find jobs and don't have anywhere else to turn.

Every state is different when it comes to processing claims. Checking your state's unemployment office is the most reliable way to make sure that you get your claims in a timely manner.

In the meantime while people are waiting for checks, there's another movement underway. Efforts to get a vote on a Tier 5 extension are next on the docket for the long-term jobless. Whether or not a measure will be brought to vote before the mid-term elections has not been indicated yet, although most signs point to no.

If we want help from the U.S. we are in the wrong country. We have endless funds to send to any country that asks for it but have to stretch our pennies when the tax payers need help!

After working for over 30 years, I can not believe I do not qualify for anymore state benefits after 1 year. After calling the unemployment office in my area, I was told I could no longer get state benefits but I could get 9 weeks of federal benefits. I don't understand. I know of people that have worked half the amount of time as I and have been on unemployment for over 2 years. How does this system work? If I don't find work soon, I am going to lose my house.

Lesi, you will be eligible for the entitlement. Sounds to me that you are in Tier 4 by being in your 73rd week. Just all depends. You can probably check your account for whatever state you are in and it will tell you how much money u have left. I'm also waiting and it is hard.

If you're from Indiana, count your weeks carefully and make sure they are not shorting you. I don't know how they get away with this, but they do. Their favorite trick is to make your eligibility date start while you're still getting your last paycheck so that they can deny that week and then Week 2 is a "Waiting Week" for which you get nothing. So in Indiana, you really only get 24 weeks. Their second-favorite trick is to put less money in the account than they're supposed to, so that in a given tier, the money doesn't last as long as the weeks you're supposed to get.

What does Obama have to do with this? He is basically cleaning up Bush's mess. No matter who is in the White House right now, it would be the same situation. Obama been wanted the extension passed. It was the republicans that held it up.
