2010 Unemployment Extension Benefits Bill - 60th Affirmative Vote Available
Carte Goodwin from West Virginia Will Be Sworn in July 20th - Unemployment Extension Passage Expected!
Senator Robert Byrd from West Virginia died before being able to vote for the unemployment extension prior to the July 4th Holiday. His replacement, Carte Goodwin, has been chosen by the governor of West Virginia.
According to the Washington Post, Carte Goodwin is the 36th year old chief counselor for the West Virginian governor. Although he hasn't announced plans formally, Goodwin is expected to run for the seat.
With the addition of Carte Goodwin to the Senate, it is expected that he will go along with all the other Democrats (save Ben Nelson - D, NE) and vote FOR the unemployment extension benefits bill. This will give the yay-sayers the 60 vote majority needed to get the bill to Obama's desk.
Goodwin is going to be sworn into office on July 20th so the earliest that the measure will be brought to vote is Tuesday.
The bill has been mulling around, and now that it has the required majority (assuming that the two Republican Senators previously committed to voting FOR the extension remain on that side) many unemployed workers are breathing a sigh of relief.
Many expect to get retroactive pay to June 2, 2010. This was the previous unemployment extension cutoff, although some received benefits beyond that date if they were in the middle of a tier when the benefits lapsed.
The unemployment extension benefits bill doesn't provide for a Tier 5 extension and it doesn't provide for states to receive tiers previously ineligible for.
Stay tuned for further updates.

Post a CommentI am very passionate about the passage of HR 4213 with Tier 5 and the Cobra Premium Assistance Program…I sincerely believe that Washington has failed over 4 Million hard working unemployed fellow Americans. This bill was to be passed before the Memorial Day vacation, and as of the middle of July is still being thrown around Pennsylvania Avenue. The unemployed are now not only black and blue but bloody from being kicked to the tune of the old Potomac Congressional soft shoe containing lots of spikes….The unemployed cannot accept the unacceptable!!
The unemployed are not a football we are a group of long term faceless citizens who have exhausted all available weeks of unemployment benefits. Some have been without any income since March, (some January and February) and are still unable to find employment. We spend every day sending out resumes and applying for jobs, 90% of the time we don’t even receive an acknowledgement that our resumes and applications were received. There a
People dropping off tire 4 is making the unemployment rate look good to these idiots
ALL Unemployed need new Tier 5 or Tier 5,6 for one additional year. Congress knows this for awhile. Along with this millions of people have exhausted benefits or been throwed off with deadlines. We Need a Bill with only one deadline the end of the length of the bill. The deadlines got new unemployed kick off before they were in it. We ned a additional long term recovery extention FOR ALL Unemployed . Period! Government caused this issue with delays, blocks , deadlines in an economy that has not picked up in jobs only false numbers to show for it it is time to do what is moraly right now report correct jobless rates and extend benefits.
angie im not sure they will go back that far!....but you should of been put on the tier and still should be getting a check...i missed the tier by 5 days! so i got 26 weeks than nothing!...i have afmaily to fed and was given no notice that i was not getting my check! the gov can pay to have 6000 toilet seats but cant help its own people...stop helping the world and help us
Republicans argue The $34 billion needed to extend benefits would be borrowed, adding to the nation's mounting debt. Republicans have tapped into the public's anger and concern over that debt, saying they would only support extending benefits if the bill was paid for. This president says. The republicans say we need to pay for. The why are dems against taking money from stimulus left? Dems say no why no good argument? Both sides stop telling us this is a deficit spending issue. If it is then every single dime being spent by congress is a the same issue. Why does congress seem to be telling us helping unemployed is not as important vs everything else. Somehow this is where they choose to make it a deficit issue? How ridiculous is it to think your trying to tell us this is a spending issue? We are not that stupid. Play these games with other spending issues not helping unemployed. I suggest let's start with not spending any money on foreign countries before we help Americans. It's our ta
Would someone please explain to me that if passed, the umemployed will receive retoactive pay. My last check was thru May 29th or close to that time but I wasn't put into the next tier. Will I get retroactive pay up until now, July 17th?
Wow... so are you saying "Goodwin" will get a lifetime pension for being a senator just for two months??? Hell... what a deal.
even if we vote them out they still get paid a pension for a being a senator so they will never really be unemployed!!!!!
keep in mind this does NOT cover the tier 5 and those that have been on it longer.
OMG the GOP would rather let oud ountry go to hell than to pass the UE ext. pass. They think people are dumb and an not see who is keeping this country from progressing. IN NOVEMBER REMEMBER WHO IS ON THE PEOPLES SIDE, vote them OUT. Your president wants to get this country back on course. The GOP have been made because Obama is trying to do whats best for everyone. The GOP have blocked or bitched about anything that helps the middle class and the poor. How uneducated can you be to ignore the need for people to have money for the basic needs in life. I hate them all and pray that they will no longer have a say in the well being of the citizens they were put there to serve.
