2010 Unemployment Extension Passes House as Stymied Senate Goes to Recess

Jennifer Waite
The House of Representatives has voted to extend unemployment benefits for many out of work Americans, in line with the 2010 Unemployment Extension bill (H.R. 5618). The action is stalled in the Senate, however, and won't be revisited until the Senate returns from the July 4 recess, which begins today. The 2010 Unemployment Extension bill, also known as the Restoration of Emergency Unemployment Compensation Act of 2010 (H.R. 5618), seeks to help prevent a further decline in the American economy and morale, but it cannot get past the Senate, where Republicans claim the measure is just too expensive.

House OK's Emergency 2010 UI Benefits Extension, Measure Held Up In The Senate

Senate Democrats are expected to take up the UI extension measure with renewed vigor when they return from recess on July 12, but it remains to be seen if Republicans can be swayed to pass the bill to allow the deadline for filing for unemployment benefits to be extended until November 30. Thus far, the 2010 Unemployment Extension bill has been blocked four times in June alone, despite concessions made by the Democrats on the "extras" attached.

If the 2010 Unemployment Extension bill fails get past the current Republican filibuster, which was cemented last night with a 'nay' vote by Sen. Nelson (D-NE), more than a million Americans stand to lose their unemployment insurance. Sen. Nelson crossed party lines Wednesday night to give the Senate GOP the last vote they needed to block the 2010 Unemployment Extension bill , while the Democrats narrowly missed the needed 60% of votes to get the measure to the floor for a vote. The Democrats had a painful 59% of votes, just one point shy of what they needed.

The House of Representatives passed a stand alone Unemployment Insurance extension bill Thursday, a scaled down version of the Restoration of Emergency Unemployment Compensation Act of 2010, which would allow the deadline for filing for jobless benefits to be extended until November 30, 2010. The UI benefits extension bill will also retroactively restore unemployment benefits to more than a million out-of-work Americans who lost their benefits over the last two months.

Unfortunately for many of those fearing the worst, it will be two weeks before the Senate considers the 2010 Unemployment Extension bill when they return to session on July 12. Without the Senate's approval, H.R. 5618 could shrivel up and die, and with it, the security and stability of millions of American families.

Just remember those KIngs and Queens

It is nice to know that the Senate can relax and take vacations while the rest of us are struggling to pay our bills and feed our families. WE CANNOT AFFORD VACATIONS.
It makes me sick what is being done to us. We are not asking for a handout, we are asking help from our elected officials during difficult times.
We just want the basics in life to survive. We did not choose to be out of work. This truly makes me physically sick. Remember when it is time to vote how the Republican Senate treated us.

Sen. Nelson is a hypocrite. He wasn't so against spending when he snatched millions in concessions for Nebraska to pass healthcare. Typical politician; selective amnesia. Stop screwing us and pass the damn extension!

After working all my life, proudly serving in The United States Marine Corps, in Vietnam - following in my father's footsteps who fought on Guadalcanal and the South Pacific, my oldest son why served in both Iraq Wars as a Marine and retiring after 20 years, my youngest son preparing to go into the Marine Corps...I never thought MY GOVERNMENT would turn their backs on those of us in need of these Unemployment Benefits. I never dreamed that one day, on a July 4th, in the autumn of my life, I would be ashamed of MY GOVERNMENT...but I am.
