2010 Unemployment Extension: Why Even 99ers Should Reapply for Jobless Benefits

Jennifer Waite
Today, millions of Americans who rely on the unemployment extension passed several months back, especially those dubbed the 99ers, are wondering how they will be able to handle the holidays, feed their family and pay their rent come January. Benefits are set to run out for vast amounts of American households, and so far, Congress has stalled and voted down further unemployment extension efforts.

What Will Happen With Unemployment Benefits Extension? Should You Re-Apply For New Extension?

According to one economic analyst on CNN Tuesday morning, a failure to pass more unemployment extension benefits will result in two million out-of-work Americans having their back-up cash supply cut off by the end of December. By February of 2011, which is just around the corner, that number would double. Four million out-of-work Americans who are suddenly potentially without even the most limited, basic means to support their families during the harshest, coldest time of the year.

Economists and those well-versed in the unemployment benefits process say to file for extensions even if you don't think you will get them. You may not find your application helps in the immediate, but if the new Congress passes new legislation in January or February, it may aid you in getting retroactive unemployment benefits.

The Cost Of Unemployment: Does Jobless America Need A Bail-Out?

According to CNN Tuesday, the last round of unemployment extension benefits cost 34 billion dollars. That is a lot of zeros, but you'd have to add one or two more to account for the total spent on jobless benefits extensions so far this year. Yet, a survey by the National Association of Business Economics this summer showed two-thirds of economists surveyed agreed with the stimulative aspect of the unemployment extension which passed only after several stalemates in Congress.

What do you think of the unemployment mess in America right now? Do we need another extension to keep American families afloat during these turbulent times? Do you feel as if the unemployed have had as much assistance as we can collectively afford to dole out right now, and they're going to have to sink or swim on their own?

Let us know exactly how you feel and how another round of unemployment extensions would affect your family or those you love. You can leave a comment below!

We reached 99 weeks last week. After 99 weeks of trying to get work, make a living, keep our home, I know at the age of 51, this family is lost. We are professional people, electrical engineer and computer science degrees, have always worked hard, did everything right, lived within our means, and now it is all gone. I simply cannot face another day.

We are also 99ers here in Ohio where there are no jobs to be given. We had no Christmas for our kids, our electric is about to be shut off, same with the gas and water. What am I to do? There's no work, and the governement would rather help Haiti with all of the money theyve stolen from me since my first job at 16. I owe $700 on my car yet that I've been paying on for the past 18 months, and now I'm going to lose it. I cannot afford $3.19 @ gallon gas to see my doctor and I'm sick. I've fell into depression and I'm out of medicine, cannot get to my doctor or new prescriptions, then all of my bills and everything else, makes me feel like a total failure when since 16 I've worked hard. If I didnt have kids that depend on me, I'd end everything....I have no where else to turn. My unemployeement ran out the end of October, and there's no work here to get, and who can afford to travel 100 miles a day? That would land me in Columbus, where also work is sca

Jesus is the answer for you if you havent invited him into your hearts. I have been unemployed for two 1/2 years. I was in the service prior for 12 yrs looking to make a new start WOW i got instead a bigger test of my faith in the lord and he has made a way and still is. I say to you all put your faith in the promises of God and build on your first love Jesus for he knows all our pains and sorrows only he is the streingth in our weaknesses let him know as you seek him to keep your mind soul and spirit balanced through this time in your life. Dont let the devil steal your joy, for the joy of the lord is your streingth which is from the holy spirit in us as we look towards Jesus for the comfort in the storm is my prayers for us all AMEN.
