2010 Unemployment Extension: When Will I Receive Unemployment Benefits?

When Will Unemployment Extension Go into Effect? Find Out Here!

The hotly-contested 2010 unemployment extension bill, H.R. 4213, has now been passed by both houses of Congress, and was signed into law by President Barack Obama on Thursday, July 22. A minority-led filibuster has had the 2010 unemployment extension bill held up in the Senate for months, and unemployment benefits for millions of jobless Americans along with it.

Finally, this week, the Democrats got their 60 votes for cloture (meaning the matter could be put to a formal vote). The H.R. 4213 unemployment insurance extension measure went to a floor vote on Wednesday, passing 59-39 (See voting records at OpenCongress.org).

H.R. 4213 News: When Will The Unemployment Extension Bill Go Into Effect?

Even at this juncture, the Republican-led minority held up the process of passing H.R. 4213 as long as they could, allowing their 30 hour debate period to fully expire before allowing the vote to take place. As if to say, "What's one more day to millions of Americans? So what if they like to eat or put gas in their cars. We have 30 hours of grand-standing time available, and by golly, we're gonna use it!"

Many are wondering when they will actually begin to see relief from H.R. 4213. Now that the bill finally passed, people want to know: when exactly will the unemployment extension go into effect? The answer is, there is no simple answer.

However, by President Obama's estimate on Friday, over two million jobless Americans will begin receiving extended unemployment benefits as early as next week with the passage of H.R. 4213. It may take up to two weeks for some to receive their extended benefits. Unemployment benefits will be extended for many until November 30, 2010.

The 2010 unemployment extension news comes as relief to many; however many more people will be sorely disappointed. No extension of federal unemployment benefits is outlined for "99ers", or others who have exhausted all possible tiers in their state. In other words, no tier 5.

The $25-per-week increase in unemployment benefits many expected was stripped from the legislation to appease Republicans and cut spending on the issue; so, no extra cash. Healthcare cuts, including COBRA assistance for out-of-work Americans, were also made across the board to control spending on the 2010 unemployment extension bill.

    Very good story!!
I have been waiting for this to pass.
You know, we can't help it that our economy is bad and there aren't jobs for us! It really stinks!
To really put the knife in Americans backs..they let our one source of income lapse. Now the bills are on hold as well. So much for any credit score!!
I'm so glad to live in America, but sometimes the politics just go over my head! I can't understand how they can let americans suffer just so they can make their point.
I was taught as a child that two wrongs don't make a right!!!
