2010 Unemployment Extensions - House Passes UI Extension Standalone Bill H.R. 5816

But the Senate Has Already Gone Home on Recess

S Gardner
Having postponed the vote on H.R. 5618, the "Restoration of Emergency Unemployment Compensation Act of 2010", until today, the House voted 270-153 in favor of the bill's passage this morning.

This latest standalone version of an unemployment benefits bill would have extended UI benefits through November 30, 2010. It did not continue, however, the $25 per week stimulus addition.

Unfortunately, the Senate adjourned last night and has released its members to return home for the Fourth of July recess today. So this House version of unemployment benefits extensions cannot be voted upon until the Senate resumes business on July 12.

There have been reports of a possible emergency session being called in the Senate to vote on H.R. 5618, the unemployment extension tonight. But according to OpenCongress.org, that does not appear to be panning out.

Nevertheless, even if the Senate did reconvene for an emergency session tonight to vote on the House's version of the unemployment extension legislation, it is likely to meet the same fate as the Senate version which was voted down yesterday by one vote. It is for this very reason that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid would be unlikely to call such an emergency session.

So the unemployed will have to wait - and suffer - for several more weeks. With over 1.2 million already without benefits; an estimated 2 million or more to have lost their unemployment lifeline by the time the Senate reconvenes on July 12, just surviving this "holiday" and the next few weeks is going to be a monumental task.

But upon Congress' return, and the expected appointment of a replacement for the late Senator Robert Byrd (D-W. Virg), Senator Harry Reid will then have the choice of which of the bills before him he will put up for a vote. At that time, he will have his choice of either the Senate version, which lost a cloture vote yesterday by just one vote, or H.R. 5618, the emergency unemployment extension which was just passed in the House today. Either way, and that will be up to Reid, unemployment benefits extension legislation is expected to finally have the 60 votes necessary to pass.

This will be a welcome moment for the millions of Americans so impacted by this "jobless recovery". I pray we can all find a way to hang on for the next few very difficult weeks. In the meantime, we must all continue to bombard our legislators and the media to voice our opinions about and our need for unemployment benefits extensions. Let's not take anything for granted. The vote is still right on the edge. Keep phoning, writing, emailing and faxing. For a comprehensive contact list of legislators and key media, check the end of this article.

Life has its ups and downs just keep on living and give thanks to "God" because you are employed. Everybody have there own perception about unemployed individuals. I know it is hard especially when unexpective changes happen. Nobody want to depend on getting a unemployment check for the rest of the life. I do not know how people spend there money but it hurt. Because no matter how many applications you fill out and make calls you still do not get hired. The one stop career center is a resource to help you find employment but when you go there some of the worker can not give you enough information about a job. It is fusrating going everyday and on the internet to find a job. Just how can people not understand we are living so real financial hardship.

I would like to start by saying , that up to this point I was very thankful for the $202 that I received for about 14 mo. I would rather be working anyday. I have been looking for work ; seems like for ever . I don't think I could buy a job , an I have a college education. I think that our gov don't care ; if they did care about the hard working people in this country ! If they did ; I think their old wrinkled asses wouldn't have took a July 4th break an left us to hanging . I still have $1040 left on my ext benefit's . That's ok . Come Dec the the Rep will take the house back . GOOD LUCK AMERICA , LOOKS LIKE WE ARE GOING TO NEED IT !

I claimed my last check yesterday morning. I have been looking for work for a year and can't begin to pay for my families needs at minimum wage(even without credit card debits). I have been going to school and still looked for work to try to get back on my feet. I would have graduated in December and had much better odds of getting a job. If the senate can't get it together soon, I am not only going to have to explain to my child why we have no milk, bread, toilet paper, home, etc. but I may have also wasted the PELL grant money I received for school. I am up a creek without a paddle and they are taking their sweet time. I can't imagine the folks that ran out weeks ago.

Also I am not democrat or republican, I think its time for a fresh start. The Senate needs to sit down TODAY and come to a compromise for their country and their citizens that pay taxes and pay their salaries. November vote liberal, lessen their salaries to less than 6 digits and lets clean up the economy. Us Americans cannot get caught up in the Republican-Democrat politics anymore.

I am an employed america who is fighting for the unemployed. The ignorant people on here who cannot spell or speak in proper english should not be able to post things. I understand I have children and a family. Which means daycare, food, shelter. The people that comment have no clue. My heart breaks for you guys and I know the measly 300 a week is almost impossible for you to live on. I don't blame you for not having employment, statistically its impossible for everyone to have a job right now.. NO you cannot start over and make it on 7.25 an hour. Thats daycare alone a week so how do you pay the bills.. Commonsense is what alot of bitter Americans lack. I am rooting for you guys and my heart aches for your families. I dont believe you all should have to start at 7.25 an hour and start life all over. I will pay every tax dollar to help you all out. Please keep your head up and know that compassionate americans are listening and trying to help the situation also.

FINAL POST - CONTINUED FROM LAST ...scam of a "war on terror" started based on WMD lies, this debt started with the Bush administration, and is largely (even according to Republican financial analysts) due to tax breaks and loopholes to avoid taxes given to big business and the wealthy earning over $1 million, and those breaks don't create jobs because they're taking jobs overseas. Instead the middle class pays their taxes for them. If that's what you want, then keep talking crap and I hope you get what you deserve.
