2010 Vendy Awards Kick Off September 25

Are you a foodie or know someone who is? If so, you'll want to be on Governors Island on Saturday, September 25.

Often referred to as the "Oscars" of food, the Vendy Awards, hosted by world-renowned chef Mario Batali, is a one-night event in which some of New York City's most talented street food vendors are recognized and revered. Any proceeds raised from the event go to support the Street Vendor Project of the Urban Justice Center.

This year marks the sixth year that the city has hosted the Vendy Awards. The even will feature an intense cook-off between some of New York City's best sidewalk chefs for a chance to win. The festivities last from noon to 5:00 PM. Event organizers invite attendees to arrive early and stay late.

Despite it being a pretty prestigious award for sidewalk chefs, the Vendy Awards are clearly all about the people. Each nominee presents their cart and cook for event attendees who line up to enjoy their eats. Beer and wine are plentiful. And its not only food and drink - there are performances, music, and even a raffle.

Leading up to the event, the public decides which vendors become Vendy Award nominees by tipping off the sponsors during the summer. Voting is closed close to the start of the event and the finalists are announced.

During the event, audience members also vote for their favorite sidewalk chefs. Additionally, attendees also vote for the People's Taste Award, Rookie Vendor of the Year Award, and the Dessert Category.

Though this late in the game many tickets may be sold out, prices are as follows: $85 for General Admission, $43 for Kids, and $175 for Table Service. There are also several donor packages ranging in price from $200 to $1,000. A portion of the admission cost is tax-deductible.
