Twelve medals were awarded in the four figure skating events. China, Canada, Japan, Russia, and the United States each won two medals. Chinese and American skaters captured one gold medal and one silver medal; the Canadians garnered one gold medal and one bronze medal; and the Russians and the Japanese claimed one silver medal one bronze medal. South Korea won one gold medal and Germany claimed a bronze medal.
Men
Evan Lysacek of the United States won the gold medal in men's figure skating, upending the defending Olympic champion, Evgeni Pluschenko, of Russia, who claimed the silver medal. Lysacek's victory was the first by an American since Brian Boitano won the gold medal in Calgary in 1988. Except for a bronze medal performance by Timothy Geobel in 2002, American men have fared poorly against their Russian counterparts who have won the gold medal in every Winter Olympics since 1992.

Women
Yu-Na Kim, of South Korea, won the gold medal, relegating Mao Asada, of Japan, to claim the silver medal. Joannie Rochette, of Canada, garnered the bronze, skating after the sudden death of her mother. Rochette had placed fifth in 2006.

Couples
Xue Shen and Hongbo Zhao, while their teammates, Qing Pang and Jian Tong, garnered the silver medal. Xue Shen and Hongbo Zhao had won the bronze medal in 2002 and 2006. The German pair of Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy captured the bronze medal. Ice dancers, Moir and Tessa Virtue, of Canada, won the gold medal, while Charlie White and Meryl Davis, of the United States, garnered the silver medal. Maxim Shabalin and Oksanna Damnina, of Russia, captured the bronze medal.
