2010 Winter Olympic Games: Ice Hockey Summary

Overview

Six medals were awarded in ice hockey at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Canada won the gold medals in both men's and women's ice hockey. The United States claimed the silver medals in both of the men's and women's events. Finland garnered the bronze medals in both men's and women's ice hockey; the Finnish men defeated Slovakia, and the Finish women defeated Sweden.

Men

Gold - Canada

Since 1920, when ice hockey was first introduced to the Olympic program, Canada has played for the gold medal 11 times, and has won it eight times, including 2010. Canada has played the United States seven times for the gold medal, winning six times; its only gold medal loss to the United States came in Squaw Valley in 1960.

In the 2010 preliminary round, Canada posted two wins (one in overtime) and one loss; their only loss came to the United States by the score of 3-5. In the play-off qualifying game, Canada defeated Germany by the score of 8-2, followed by a quarter-final victory over Russia by the score of 7-3. After upending Slovakia, 3-2, in the semi-finals, Canada defeated the United States, in overtime, by the score of 3-2, for the gold medal.

Silver - United States

Including 2010, the United States has won the silver medal eight times; six times against Canada, and twice against the former Soviet Union. In the 2010 preliminary round, the United States posted three wins and no losses, with one victory coming over Canada by the score of 3-5. After receiving a bye in the play-off qualifying round, the United States defeated Switzerland by the score of 2-0 in the quarter-finals, followed by a 6-1 victory over Finland in the semifinals. The United States received the silver medal after losing to Canada in overtime by the score of 3-2.

Bronze - Finland

Finland defeated Slovakia for the bronze medal; its third in Olympic ice hockey completion, after having won it twice before in 1994 and 1998. In 1988, Finland won the silver medal, after losing to the Soviet Union in the final game. Finland reached the bronze medal game after posting two wins and one loss in the preliminary round, followed by a quarter-final victory over the Czech Republic, by the score of 2-0, and a semifinal loss to the United States, by the score of 6-1. Slovakia reached the bronze medal game by posting two wins (one in overtime) and one loss, followed by play-off victories over Norway, by the score of 4-3, and Sweden, 4-3, before losing to Canada in the semi-final, by the score of 3-2.

Women

Gold - Canada

Since 1998, when ice hockey was first included in the Olympic program for women, Canada has played in every gold medal game, winning all but one, when it lost to the United States in 1998. Canada has met the United States in every gold medal game except one, when it defeated Sweden in 2006. Undefeated (3-0) in the preliminary round, Canada defeated Finland in the semifinals by the score of 5-0, before beating the United States, 2-0, for the gold medal in the final game.

Silver - United States

The United States received the silver medal after losing to Canada, 2-0, in the gold medal game. The United States reached the gold medal game after posting a 3-0 record in the preliminary round, the defeating Sweden by the score of 9-1 in the semifinals. The United States has won three silver medals, all coming by losses to Canada.

Bronze - Finland

Finland defeated Sweden for the bronze medal by the score of 3-2. Finland reached the bronze medal game by winning two and losing one game in the preliminary round, and losing to Canada, by the score of 5-0, in the semi-finals. This win gave Finland two bronze medals since 1998. Sweden reached the bronze medal game by winning two and losing one game in the preliminary round, and losing to the United States, by the score of 9-1, in the semi-finals. Sweden has won bronze and silver medals in previous Olympic ice hockey competition.
