Nine medals were awarded in the Nordic Combined, a sport that combines ski jumping and cross-country skiing. The United States won four medals, including one gold medal and three silver medals, for its best performance ever in this event. Austria garnered two medals, including a gold medal and a bronze medal. France won one gold medal; Germany garnered a bronze medal; and Italy won a bronze medal.
Johnny Spillane, of the United States, won three silver medals. His silver medal in the normal hill/10 kilometer cross-country was the first medal ever won by an American in Nordic Combined. Spillane won a silver medal in each of the other events: the large hill/10 kilometer cross-country and the large hill/4 X 5 kilometer relay. His teammate, Bill Demong, won the gold medal in the large hill/10 kilometer cross-country, to become the first American to win a gold medal in Nordic Combined. He also won a silver medal in the large hill/4 X 5 kilometer relay. Todd Lodwick and Brett Camerota, of the United States, won silver medals in the large hill/4 X 5 kilometer relay.
Bernhard Gruber, of Austria, won a gold medal in the large hill/4 X 5 kilometer relay and a bronze medal in the large hill/10 kilometer cross-country. David Kreiner, Mario Stecher, and Felix Gottwald joined Gruber as gold medalists in the large hill/4 X 5 kilometer relay. Jason Lamy-Chappuis, of France, won the gold medal in the normal hill/10 kilometer cross-country, and Alessandro Pittin, of Italy, captured the bronze medal in the same event. Germans, Bjoern Kircheisen, Eric Frenzel, Tino Edlemann, and Johannes Rydzek, won the bronze medal in the team relay.
