A group of athletes from 20 different nations own the 63 medals included in the 2010 Winter Olympics medal count through February 16. In second place behind Germany is the United States with 8 total (2 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze), while France sits in third place in the total Olympic medal count with 7 (2 gold, 1 silver, 4 bronze). Host nation Canada boasts 5, including 2 golds, while Korea and Switzerland have each earned 4 medals. Other nations included in the current Olympic medal count are China, Austria, Norway, Italy, Sweden, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Japan, the Netherlands, Australia, Estonia, Poland, Croatia and the Russian Federation.
Finally, Germany, Switzerland and Korea lead the gold medal count with 3 apiece. One notable gold medal winner on day 5 was Magdalena Neuner of Germany, who outskiied silver medalist Slovakian Anastazia Kuzmina for the win in the women's 10 kilometer pursuit. Earlier in the week, Neuner finished second behind Kuzmina in the 7.5 kilometer sprint, so day 5's result suggests that these two women are the elite among the biathlon field in Vancouver.
