It seems I always miss these things. I even talked about it with my better half and he agreed that we should stay up and watch the phenomenon. But, as usual, we both fell fast asleep and missed the entire thing. Thank goodness for people that can keep their eyes peeled and get footage for those of us who always miss these types of events. The video I found on YouTube was the best I've seen and even comes with a gorgeous soundtrack. Click the link and turn it up!
So if you missed it, you can still see this great time lapsed version of it on YouTube here . It's the best one I've found.

More about lunar eclipses by NASA , " Total lunar eclipses in northern winter are fairly common. There have been three of them in the past ten years alone. A lunar eclipse smack-dab on the date of the solstice, however, is unusual. Geoff Chester of the US Naval Observatory inspected a list of eclipses going back 2000 years. "Since Year 1, I can only find one previous instance of an eclipse matching the same calendar date as the solstice, and that is 1638 DEC 21," says Chester. "Fortunately we won't have to wait 372 years for the next one...that will be on 2094 DEC 21." - science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2010/17dec_solsticeeclipse/
More about lunar eclipses, from NASA, "While it is merely a coincidence that the eclipse falls on the same date as this year's winter solstice, for eclipse watchers this means that the moon appearred very high in the night sky, as the solstice marks the time when the Earth's axial tilt is farthest away from the sun. A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth lines up directly between the sun and the moon, blocking the sun's rays and casting a shadow on the moon. As the moon moves deeper and deeper into the Earth's shadow, the moon changes color before your very eyes, turning from gray to an orange or deep shade of red. The moon takes on this new color because indirect sunlight is still able to pass through Earth's atmosphere and cast a glow on the moon. Our atmosphere filters out most of the blue colored light, leaving the red and orange hues that we see during a lunar eclipse. Extra particles in the atmosphere, from say a recent volcanic eruption, will cause the moon to appear a darker shade of red. It's the last chance for sky watchers in the continental U.S. to see a total lunar eclipse until April 15, 2014."- NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center (2010, December 17). Total lunar eclipse and winter solstice coincide on Dec. 21. ScienceDaily .
