2010 WNBA Draft Day 1 Review

The Professor
The WNBA Draft has been the introduction to many of the great stars in the league. The first day of the draft went three rounds and was full of smart picks and sly trades. The #1 Pick has been used on three Huskies with Sue Bird (2002) and Diana Taurasi (2004) being joined by Tina Charles. Charles looks to continue her winning with the Connecticut Sun. The Sun later traded for the third pick Kelsey Griffin from Minnesota Lynx the two should help Sun a lot next year. The Suns made a bold move to get the talented players they wanted this year by sacrificing their picks for next year. The Suns needed a scorer for their team and they got two with Charles and Griffin who should be able to help the frontcourt of this team greatly.

San Antonio took Charles finals rival with the fifth pick as they grabbed Jayne Appel. Appel is a known winner with three straight final fours trips. The thing is although Appel will be a great center in the WNBA that isn't the real position that San Antonio needed to improve on. The second and third round picks of Alysha Clark and Alexis Rack should be the ones that help solve the backcourt problem. I would consider Alysha Clark as one of the steals of the draft that dropped down the boards because of her smaller size for her forward position.

Another main story was the two top lottery picks that Minnesota possessed for this draft to help build on an already young core. Instead, Minnesota traded the #3 pick, but they did take Monica Wright, a guard out of Virginia. I think Wright may end up being the star of this draft as we will greatly help Minnesota with their backcourt problems. Monica will dish and score and help bring the Lynx to greater glory.
