2010 World Cup Group H Preview

Group H is Spain, Chile, Switzerland and Honduras

Shane Carney
Spain
Spain is the favorite to win the World Cup, as they are the most complete team in the tournament. They mix a solid defense with one of the most skillful midfield lines in the world. The Spanish side also possesses arguably the most dangerous striking duo of any team in the world. The big question about Spain is the country's history of underperforming in World Cups; however, Spain's Euro 2008 championship has gone a long way toward helping prove the current team is for real.

Players to watch for: Xavi, David Villa and Fernando Torres

Prediction: This Spanish side will not suffer the earlier than predicted knockout that Spain has suffered in many previous World Cups. Spain will top their group and are my favorite to win the World Cup.

Chile

Chile had a very impressive run in South American qualifying, finishing second behind Brazil. Chile has missed out on the past two World Cups, so this young team hopes to make an impact on the country's return to the big stage. While Chile isn't necessarily a powerhouse at all 11 starting positions, they do feature several players who play in Europe's top leagues who could be difference makers.

Players to watch for: Matias Fernandez, Humberto Suazo and Alexis Sanchez

Prediction: Whether Chile advances will likely depend on their game against Switzerland, which will be a tough game for the young Chilean side. If Suazo or Sanchez can create some magic, Chile could advance second out of the group.

Switzerland

Switzerland is a much stronger team than it has been in the past, which they proved by winning their qualifying group. In their 10 qualifying matches, they only allowed opponents to score a total of eight goals. Striker Alexander Frei has a knack for scoring goals consistently on the international stage and could make a huge impact.

Players to watch for: Hakin Yakin, Alexander Frei and Blaise N'Kufo

Prediction: The Switzerland vs. Chile game will decide who finishes second in this group. The edge in experience that Switzerland holds over Chile should be enough to get them through to the knockout round.

Honduras
Honduras finished third in CONCACAF qualifying behind the United States and Mexico. The team won a high percentage of their qualifying matches and have won a solid number of friendlies recently. Honduras typically beats weaker teams though and struggles when presented with a stronger team, which will be a huge problem in the World Cup. For example, Honduras lost all four of their games against the United States in 2009.

Players to watch for: Amado Guevara, Carlos Pavón and David Suazo

Prediction: Honduras may be able to pull off an upset win over Chile or Switzerland if they are on top of their game, but even with a win, it won't be enough. Honduras will exit after the group stage.

Shane, I have to admit I admire your writing, not only because of how thorough your articles are (such as this), but also how thoroughly you're going through all the World Cup groups. Talk about persistence! What's great is that whenever you work on a new group, we know what you'll be covering, and you never cut any corners short.
