2010 New York Jets Are Done

Jets Are Dead in the Water After One Week

In this week's edition of the AC Devil, I poke some fun at Jets fans leaping off of bridges

"The New York Jets are a 4-12 team without Revis. 6-10 with him." -West Side Eric of Zac's Backs fame

Eric is the eternal pessimist when it comes to just about everything, but he certainly isn't alone in doubting the Jets after week one of the 2010 NFL season. On Sunday night, the Jets offense was abysmal non-existent, quarterback Mark Sanchez was seemingly grounded by his coaching staff and, when he was actually allowed to throw the football, Sanchez resembled a different Southern Cal quarterback. Since about 11:30 that night, Jets fans have been phoning into sports talk radio shows throughout the NYC area to voice their displeasure and doubts regarding the J-E-T-S. Is all this panic a little premature after only 60 minutes of football?

Nope.

The 2010 New York Jets are about as dead in the water as a football team can be after just one regular season game. The Jets have been completely exposed both on the field and in the locker room. This just isn't a football team to be taken seriously in 2010. Here's why.

Why the 2010 New York Jets are done reason 1: Kris Jenkins

Nose tackle Kris Jenkins, the backbone of the Jets defensive line, will miss the rest of the 2010 NFL season due to a torn ACL. Jenkins' NFL career could be over as a result of the injury, as could the Jets 2010 season. How can this Jets defense possibly get by without Jenkins on the d-line? This unit has never had to deal with Jenkins on the sidelines for a long period of time.

Why the 2010 New York Jets are done reason 2: Mark Sanchez

Sanchez has been more liability than leader since last November. I mean, just look how he let the Jets down in the playoffs. What we saw on Monday night was both a testament to the QBs talents, as well as proof that his own coaching staff has zero faith in him. The Jets were downright silly to not keep Hollywood Brett Favre or go after a more veteran quarterback, such as Mike Vick or Jake Delhomme. Things will just get worse with Sanchez taking the snaps.

Why the 2010 New York Jets are done reason 3: Overrated defense

I'm not sure what Jets fans were expecting with Rusty McRevis and Fathers Cromartie in the secondary. There's absolutely zero reason to expect that the secondary is going to become a more cohesive unit as the 2010 NFL season progresses. Sure, the Jets caused three turnovers on Monday night and held the Ravens to just 49 yards rushing. All of that was due to Baltimore miscues, such as QB Joe Flacco holding onto the football too long or Baltimore ball carriers not securing the football. Certainly the New York blitz schemes/run defense had nothing to do with it.

Why the 2010 New York Jets are done reason 4: Schedule

There's no way the Jets can defeat the Patriots at the Meadowlands and the Dolphins in Miami. The Jets always lose to the Pats at home and Miami is a different team this season. After starting 1-3 (even the lowly Jets can beat the Bills), New York will likely lose to Minnesota, Denver (at Mile High) and Green Bay. That's a 1-6 start, kids. Season over.

When the Mets started the 2010 MLB season strong, I was the only Amazins fan I knew that kept things in perspective. "This team won't finish the season at .500," I told everybody. Look at them now. Hopefully, Jets fans will read this and better prepare themselves for the long NFL season ahead. The sooner you all get that the Jets aren't a Super Bowl team in 2010, the better you'll be.

Or you can just come back here after the Jets host the Patriots; when Gang Green shows what they're made of.

Looks like this satire never came true. the 7-2 Jets keep rolling along, losing only to Baltimore and Green Bay. When you can play awful and win, something is going right.

"Or you can just come back here after the Jets host the Patriots; when Gang Green shows what they're made of." Seriously, your ability to not get the sarcasm in this piece is five stars. Howled with laughter here
