2010's American Idols Are Down to the Lucky Seven

Andrew and Katie Go Out in a Pair

More votes were cast on Wednesday's American Idol than any other week to date this season. Since fans are allowed to vote over and over, anything can happen. Dramatic surprises have plagued other seasons of American Idol, but so far in 2010...no major upsets. This results' show was no exception.

The best part of the evening was the entertainment. Brooke White and Justin Gaston, previous American Idol finalists, performed an impressive duet. Season 9's DiDi Benami is reminiscent of Brooke in many ways. These returning contestants were a testimonial to the opportunities that await each of this season's finalists.

Adam Lambert reminded us why we always looked forward to his performances last season on American Idol. In typical showman style, Adam didn't disappoint. The laser light effects, especially at the beginning, were impressive. Adam's vocal delivery was powerful and left many of this season's vocalists paling by comparison.

The night, however, was all about which contestants would be leaving the show. The ominous three stools have gone by the wayside at this point. Host Ryan Seacrest simply utilizes center stage as the spot where the castoffs receive the bad news.

First up, Andrew Garcia was called front and center along with Casey James and Aaron Kelly. Andrew was told it was the end of the road for him. He took the news graciously. He was humble and cordial, expressing gratitude for the opportunity. His exit song wasn't wonderful, but he nonetheless left holding his head high.

Aaron and Casey were told they were safe. Considering Aaron's recent performances, I'd say he got lucky. I don't think we can count him out just yet, however.

Ryan called the remaining six Idols onto the stage together. Crystal Bowersox, Siobhan Magnus and Lee DeWyze were all told that they would be returning next week so were sent back to 'safety'. I certainly hope so. No other contestants are in their league.

That left the bottom three standing center stage...Katie Stevens, Michael Lynche and Tim Urban. I thought 'Teflon Tim' just might be bidding farewell, but he survived once again. Given his performance on Tuesday, I'd say he deserved to stay another week. I just hope his fan base isn't powerful enough to put him all the way through to the top spot. That he doesn't deserve. Tim received the news quickly that he wasn't the one going home this week.

Even though he landed at the bottom of the pile again, Michael was grateful for the second chance opportunity yet seemed to be anticipating an exit. However, that wasn't the case. Katie found out that she'd be joining Andrew Garcia as the second ousted contestant of the night. Understandably, Katie had a rough time holding it together as she sang her exit song, "Let It Be".

The lucky 7 were revealed without much fanfare. But let's face it...they're all lucky.

I missed the last 2 weeks, but really haven't been impressed this season by the performers. It's like the quality just plumetted unfortunately.
