2010's Most Popular Toys for Boys Ages 6-8

Santa's Helper Asked a Group of Cub Scouts What They Wanted for Christmas

Kim Keason
I have spent countless hours wandering the aisles of stores trying to find the best Christmas presents for my two boys (ages 6 & 8). Boys at this age can be very difficult to buy for because they are just out of preschool age and not quite yet at the preteen age. Recently, I had the pleasure of helping out Santa at our Cub Scout Christmas party. I was in charge of keeping 80 kids in an orderly line while they waited for their turn with the Jolly Old Elf. To pass the time I asked each boy what they were going to ask Santa for and here are the most popular boys' Christmas present requests.

Anything LEGO

LEGO has sets that range in price from $3.99 to $399 (Death Star from Star Wars). With such a wide price range you can find a LEGO set for any budget. LEGO has a wide range of types of sets that will appeal to any boy and if you want to avoid specific sets then you can get just a tub of blocks. The fun is in putting the sets together then, when they start to come apart, the boys can get creative.

Star Wars Rule

Star Wars has been a consistent Christmas present for boys for the past thirty years. The boys today still love Star wars. Star Wars takes up half of an aisle in most stores. You can choose action figures, ships, LEGO sets, and lightsabers. Lightsabers are a very popular choice with boys, especially the duel-ended lightsabers.

Handheld Video Games

This was the single most popular Christmas present request that I came across for boys. During my stint with Santa a large majority of the Cub Scouts (including my own eight year-old) were asking for a Nintendo DSi. My son decided to circumvent me and go right to Santa with his request in the hopes that Santa would give in where mom had not. We'll have to wait until Christmas morning to see if the man in the red suit came through.

For the Creative Boy

I was surprised to hear how many boys wanted Moon Sand and Moon Dough for Christmas. The boys asking for this were on the younger end, ages 6 and 7. From personal experience I do not recommend Moon Sand because anything with the word 'sand' in it is not suitable to be used inside the house. Moon Dough may take care of this problem.

Harry Potter Toys

I heard two boys ask Santa for Harry Potter's wand. I didn't even realize they sold those but after some research I was able to find a wide variety of wands and other Harry Potter toys. I also heard one boy ask for Hogwart's Castle LEGO set.

Action Figures and Accessories

Action figures are fun to play with but the boys who asked for them also wanted something that went along with the figures. One boy wanted Super Hero Squad and their headquarters. Another child wanted a Batman with a Batmobile.

These six categories were the most requested toys from Santa at our Cub Scout Christmas party. If these Scouts are any indication of normal boys then anything from any of these categories would be a good bet for Christmas. Good luck shopping for your boys!

I'm learning a lot about toys for this age group. One of my grandsons turns 6 this February and he asked for things I'd never heard of, like Bakugan cards.

Good list. But alas alack, no young kids on my list.

I completely agree with your list. My boys are 7 and 10 now but they love anything Lego. The hot new toy I keep hearing about from my 7 year old is the Pillow Pet though.

I agree 100%! My 8-yr-old son's Christmas wish list is ENTIRELY LEGO and Star Wars toys (or LEGO Star Wars!). Great work :)
