2011 5Ks and Family Fun Runs in Pittsburgh, PA

Brentwood Firecracker 5K

Brentwood is a lovely town just outside of Pittsburgh, PA known for its Main Street appeal and community spirit. Every year, they host a 4^th of July Parade, which is a regional favorite, but before the parade is the Brentwood Firecracker 5K run. An average of 1,500 runners participate to run the route which begins and ends at the Brentwood Towne Square and down Brownsville Road, following the parade route. This year's 5K will be held on July 4^th at 9am. The details have yet to be announced for 2011, but in 2010 runners paid $15 for preregistration and $20 on race day; family group discounts were also available. Trophies and a cash grand prize are awarded, and fees go to benefit the community's 4^th of July celebration fund, as well as a rotating list of community charities, such as the Brentwood Food Pantry, Brentwood EMS and Disabled Veterans organization. This race is fun for the whole family; if you're not running, stake out your spot along the parade route to watch the race and relax together afterward by enjoying the parade. Run For Roch 5K

Roch (Rocky) Furguiele grew up in Pittsburgh's Mt. Washington neighborhood and honed his skills as a runner while attending Pittsburgh's public schools. This race is run in his honor and proceeds benefit a scholarship fund for Pittsburgh's youth. The 5K is run entirely atop beautiful Mt. Washington, and is mostly flat with a few slopes in the middle. A flat, one-mile walk is also held on the same day, for those who wish to participate in a less strenuous event. Because both events are offered, the whole family can get involved to support a wonderful cause in the most scenic spot in Pittsburgh, PA.

Kids Triathlon Series

The Kids Triathlon Series has become the major annual fundraising effort for Habitat for Humanity in the Pittsburgh area. Kids swim, bike and run in a fun race tailored to their age group. This has become a favorite for kids and families in the Pittsburgh area, and it's all for a great cause. The registration fee only covers the cost of the race, so kids are asked to raise pledges from friends and family to benefit Habitat for Humanity. Participants will also receive a t-shirt and race bag. There are two dates and locations so that everyone who wishes can participate. Not only is this a wonderful fundraiser for a great cause, it's a really fun day for kids, allowing them to burn some energy in the middle of summer.

Run Around the Square

This popular community race includes live entertainment, a beer stop and a beautiful race route through Regent Square and Frick Park. Participants can choose between a 1.5-mile Fun Run and Walk and the 5K Race. This year, the 5K race will be capped at 1,500 participants and only online registrations will be accepted; there will be no cap for the Fun Run. Sue's Run 4 Kids

Come to Riverview Park for this lovely 5K race, 5K fitness walk and 1 mile family walk. Everyone can participate, and food, drinks, music, games and activities can all be found at the finish line. There will also be a prize raffle, including two tickets to a Pittsburgh Steelers game. Race fees range from $5 to $20, depending on the age and event (children 5 and under are free with a paying adult), and if you register by August 28^th, you're guaranteed a t-shirt and race bag. This race benefits KidsVoice, a nonprofit organization which provides a full range of services for abused and neglected children. The event is named in memory of Sue Lipman, a former elementary school teacher and then social worker at Children's Hospital, who was a strong supporter of KidsVoice and had a passion for underprivileged children and their needs.
