2011 Earth Day Celebrations in Louisville, Kentucky

Earth Day is an annual celebration for people all over the world to learn how to make Earth healthy while hopefully continuing through the rest of the year to be respectful of our planet. Earth Day celebrations allow people to gather together to work together, learn and pay respect to planet Earth while having some fun too. There are opportunities in the Louisville, Kentucky area for people to participate in 2011.


Louisville Zoo: Party for the Planet

Activities through the month of April, various times

Not only can children and adults celebrate Earth Day one day in April, but all month long at the Louisville Zoo. Throughout the month, there are presentations and animal encounters on scheduled days about amphibians, primates, crocodiles, plants and trees, eco-activities, and even a ZooPoopyDoo compost and mulch sale! On April 23rd there will be an Earth Day festival with many more activities for families to enjoy.

The Louisville Free Public Library will be hosting an event for children and their families to learn about planet Earth, making green crafts, and how to be kind and respectful to Earth.

April 22, 2011, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.

There are a variety of activities to celebrate Earth Day in nature's setting. There will be guided hikes, park clean-up, a live animal demonstration, a dumpster dive. There will also be a geocaching demonstration, which is becoming a very popular interest. Local businesses will be participating during the events, as well as educating the public on how they are becoming more green.

Falls of the Ohio State Park - Earth Day at the Falls

May 14, 2011 - Saturday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Just five minutes across the bridge from downtown Louisville into Indiana, the Falls of the Ohio State Park will host environmentally friendly businesses to educate guests about being so, while providing fun and entertainment for the whole family. This event will be at the Interpretive Center, but visitors will be able to enjoy the scenic Ohio River and the abundant fossils in the river bed by foot. Be sure to bring a camera and comfortable walking shoes.

Spring Break Camps

Full or half-day camps are offered during Jefferson County Public Schools and Southern Indiana schools Spring Break weeks in March and April, and what a better way to learn and appreciate planet Earth than go to camp! The Louisville Science Center will host week-long camps for Pre-K (half-day only), and K - 6th grade students covering a variety of fun topics in a hands-on learning environment.
