The engine is a 2.5 L inline transverse 4 cylinder, providing 171 horsepower to the front wheels. That combined with the 6 speed automatic transmission allows 21 mpg in the city and 28 on the highway. The 16 inch cast aluminum wheels and side mirrors with integrated blind spot mirror, makes it a pleasure to drive.
There are two side panel beams in the doors, for safety in an accident. But along with that there are side curtain airbags, and a special airbag in the seat to protect passengers along with the usual front airbags. Further safety features (all of these are standard on the 2011 Ford Escape) include rollover sensor, and a tire pressure monitoring system.
The 2011 Ford Escape has plenty of room for 5 adults, plus groceries, with over 30 cubic feet of space behind the 60/40 back seat. But one of the best features of the back area is that the seats fold perfectly flat, providing over 67 cubic feet of space. This is a big help when loading it with boxes or camping gear.
Another feature of the back, besides the 12v outlet, is that the rear window opens with the key-fob remote. This is different from many SUV's where the entire lift gate opens, exposing everything in the back - not a good idea when it is raining.
The driver is presented with a simple dashboard, with a speedometer, tachometer and a small readout that provides, fuel economy, engine temperature, and tire pressure - all configurable by the touch of a button on the steering wheel. Other features of the steering wheel include, cruise control controls, and radio volume controls. Also, voice activated SYNC is available on the Ford Escape, making it possible for you to use your cell phone or I-pod without taking your eyes off the road.
The 2011 Ford Escape is probably the best small SUV for the price, which is a very reasonable $21,457. If you are looking for an all purpose SUV with great gas mileage, then this is the car for you.
