2011 Golden Globe Awards: 'The Social Network', 'Glee', Colin Firth and Natalie Portman Came Out on Top (Full List of Winners)

"The Social Network" Swept the Big Film Categories Winning 4 Including Best Motion Picture - Drama

Maxine Nelson
Ricky Gervais was on a roll as host for the second consecutive year at the 2011 Golden Globe Awards with his acerbic barbs and digs at certain films, actors and the industry as a whole. This time the audience wasn't laughing as much. "The Social Network" won a total of 4 awards including Best Original Score, Best Screenplay, Best Director and Best Motion Picture - Drama.

One of the best highlights of the entire evening was Michael Douglas making an unexpected appearance as a presenter for Best Motion Picture - Drama. The crowd gave him a roaring standing ovation that was well deserved. Last year Douglas was diagnosed with advanced stage four throat cancer. He looked and sounded marvelous as he thanked and then spoke to the audience.

As expected Natalie Portman won Best Performance in a Motion Picture - Drama - Actress for "Black Swan." She looked beautiful in her pink satin maternity gown. Colin Firth won for his role as the stammering King George VI in "The King's Speech." Annette Bening's win for Musical or Comedy - Actress in "The Kids Are All Right" mentioned in her speech that her husband, Warren Beatty, won the Golden Globe Award in 1962 for Most Promising Actor.

On the television side "Glee" was the big winner of the night winning three Golden Globes. The first and second were for Best Supporting Performance in a Series, Mini-Series, or TV Film - Actor and Actress. Chris Colfer gave a motivating acceptance speech with a message about anti-bullying. Jane Lynch is on a roll with her win. "Glee" also won Best Series - Musical or Comedy. Al Pacino's portrayal of Jack Kevorkian won him a Golden Globe in the category of Best Performance in a Mini-Series or TV Film - Actor.

A special presentation of the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement by Matt Damon wasgiven to Robert DeNiro. He had a lot to say about his career and other political issues. Usually the Golden Globes are a precursor to the Oscars. It will be interesting if the winners in the film categories are nominated for Academy Awards. Only time will tell as the nominations for the Oscars will be out on January 25.

    Thanks for the summary.

Gervais 'on a roll'?? Even by the standards of potty mouthed Hollywood celebs, he was disgustiing. The whole show, with the exception of Firth and few others, was an exercise in who could sound the dumbest or dirtiest. It's a toss between De Niro and Downey and Gervais. What a disaster. .

I wasn't able to watch the show last night. You do such a nice job with this type of article! Thanks for the info, Maxine! :)
